I ran the SUV without the engine cover and fuse box cover. I still hear the faint pinging. I don't hear it with the windows down or with the radio on. Its definitely more like a faint rapid pinging, not a rattle. Maybe like hot oil sizzling in a frying pan but with a more metallic tin sound. That's exactly how it sounds to me.
The sound is definitely not inside the cabin the but more likely in the engine bay because it sounds muffled. I should just stop focusing on the sound and enjoy my new Jeep. It seems to be a common problem and people here posted hearing it since the 2014 models and the vehicles have nothing catastrophic happen from that noise.
So I'll fiddle with it more tomorrow because I'm OCD about it.
1) Move the heater hose around away from the heat shield and see if that's it.
I'll update tomorrow. Let me know if you find out anything else too.
