Obviously being on the rack, the car wasn't under any load. The pinging sound did not manifest itself under those conditions. In any case, the dealer knew the noise was there but couldn't figure it out. On the second week they had the Chrysler expert take a look at it. The expert noticed the sound on test drive and advise the dealer to remove the valve train cover and send him pictures of the camshaft. Upon inspecting the valve train components, they discovered two lifter plungers slightly spongy and replace 2 valve lifters. I was hoping this would do the trick...but sound persists. The dealer asked me bring the car back at a later date empty of gas and I suppose they want to test out the fuel system.

I've attached their diagnosis.

Have you taken it to the dealer yet? Was it an exhaust leak?
No, I haven't taken it in yet. I bought a OBD scanner and found I didn't have any codes. I also tried a tank of 92 octane and 87 octane gas from Chevron instead of my usual costco gas. Didn't seem to make a difference. Without any codes, I felt like I would just be wasting my time going in a noise. The pinging noise under load seems to be less noticeable lately so I don't know if it is going away or if it is a fuel issue, the car is adjusting the long term fuel trim to compensate. At this point my plan is to take it in when I hit 3000 miles. Hopefully by then it should be a little warmer and if it is pinging it should be worse with warmer temperatures. I'm also hoping there may be a fix for the luke warm heated seats by then and maybe there will be a software update for the rough shifting tranny(although that seems to be getting better with time too). I have about 1800 miles on it now. I should be at 3000 by the end of April. Compared to my 2014 V6, my 2015 v6 gas mileage is worse and the engine feels less powerful. Kudos to your dealer for trying to figure it out, but based on your story, I don't have much hope mine would do any better.

Oh yeah - So when you first start your car in the morning, do you hear like this "tink tink tink" noise. It sounds like metal expanding/contracting like when I shut the car off after some hard driving, but it does that at startup which I don't think I have ever noticed before on other vehicles. Try remote starting your car and listen when you are standing in front of the car.

In the beginning the car was loud with the tink tink tink sound you described. It seems to be less now though compared to before. On another note... The dealer gave me a loaner GC. Of course I was going to see if that pinging sound would come out of that one. Guess what, it did....not as loud though but you can definitely hear it going up a hill. That GC had a quieter engine overall compared to mine. I know you mentioned that you were getting poor gas mileage. What are you getting?

Keep me up the date with what's going on. If they give you a loaner..see if you can duplicate.

Mileage on my 2014 was 18.1, hand calculated over 28,000 miles. Mileage on my 2015 is 16.7, hand calculated at 1800 miles. Gas mileage reported by the EVIC has been about 10% higher on both my cars.

You are lucky to have a dealer give you a GC as a loaner. My dealer has a loaner fleet, but it is $20 a day and I usually get a dodge journey.

Re: 2014 V6 Rattle?

I went through all this trouble with my 15 Summit as well. Spent a bunch of time at the dealer and they could not tell me what the exact cause is of the noise. I also drove three other WK2's and they all make the noise. I spoke with a Chrysler tech and he claimed its a normal pentastar noise and its only audible because the engine is set so far back towards the cabin. I have gotten used to it and i am at 9k miles and I think its getting a little quieter.

Thanks for the post. I'll turn the radio up. That seems to help.

Wait...what?

The V6 isn't any closer to the cabin than the V8. It just looks that way since it doesn't extend as far forward toward the front bumper to fill the space up front because, you know, it's not as big...

Do these buttheads really think they're helping anything by making stuff up?

For what it's worth, I don't hear that same noise, so, no, it's not normal.

All I ever hear aside from the normal running engine sounds is the "chuff" sound of the compressor kicking in. In fact, the engine is so quiet, the whir of the serpentine belt makes more noise than the engine itself. I can only really distinctly hear the engine at the exhaust.

I'm curious which trim level you have because I did hear the noise in all 4 trims that I drove (its very distinct and you have to know what to listen for) but the higher trims are more noticeable because of the road noise cancelling. Either way we unfortunately are at the mercy of the dealers and don't have much recourse if they say its normal.
