Re: 2014 V6 Rattle?

just a thought... there was a thread somewhere where a few people were having an issue with the coolant or AC hard lines making ever so slight contact with the firewall, behind the motor.

that noise definitely has some "meat" to it. Might be worth looking back there and seeing if any of the coolant or AC lines going into the heater core are really near in contact with other hard parts. Remember that the motor moves a little under load.

To help find it, could do the same test you just did but have someone else inside while you have the hood open. Suggest setting the parking break just in case, jeep wheel over flip flop is probably not to comfortable....

Re: 2014 V6 Rattle?

Can I check those lines myself, or is that something a mechanic needs to do because of access? In other words, are they hard to get to? If anyone is awesome enough to snap a photo of that section of the engine, that would be amazing.

Re: 2014 V6 Rattle?

FYI....I am extremely pleased with Chrysler and more with Larry Foss of Foss Motors who stood with me thru the issue process. I have reached and agreement with Jeep and I am 150% happy and have moved on and again I am proud to drive a vehicle with the Jeep logo on the hood. While the noise that many of us are hearing may in fact be "normal" my vehicle was without doubt on the far end of the normal scale. Again, kudos to Mr. Foss and Chrysler/Jeep for doing the right thing by expressing good customer service.

Re: 2014 V6 Rattle?

V6 Ltd. Built 6/22. Perfectly quiet until about 600 miles, then the rattling noise started and is steadily growing louder and more frequent. Cqr now has 1900 miles. Taking it in Thursday afternoon to see if the dealer can help.

Only happens under moderate acceleration. Happens every time I accelerate 'normally'. Stops immediately when I ease off gas pedal. Does not happen when I lock brakes (not moving) and give it a bit of gas in drive. Wife can clearly hear it from passenger seat. Happens in all gears. Sounds an awful lot like pinging, but muffled by the Jeep's excellent sound deadening.

Re: 2014 V6 Rattle?

I am afraid you are hearing what you will be told is "normal" for the V-6. Some are louder than others I have been told and that 600 mile mark does seem to be the tipping point. Best of luck.

Re: 2014 V6 Rattle?

Add another new owner to this list. Brand new V6 4x4 Limited with about 300 miles now. Didn't notice any noises until I started driving with the A/C and radio off. Exactly as described by someone else in this thread- a rattling/ringing noise, similar to a piece of metal rattling inside a glass. Happens only during acceleration and goes away as soon as foot is off the gas. Took it to the dealer who confirmed the noise but said they have 3 other new GCs with the same problem. They wouldn't take it in, but said they opened a STAR case and would call me back when they heard from the engineers. I refuse to accept that this is a "normal" noise.

My rattle has been solved. After 5 trips(3 different dealers) one was finally able to locate it. They said the found an oil PCV hose contacting the firewall shield. They moved the position of the hose. Rattle gone.

My dealer actually notified me about a week after I bought my jeep that I might hear a rattle by the steering column. I went out to take a look at it looks like someone has already attempted to fix it because there's a small nick out of the leather by the start stop button and they lost a plastic retaining clip. I guess they already fixed it because I never here the noise they described just wish they didn't nick the leather. Pretty sure Chrysler must know about this problem

Re: 2014 V6 Rattle?

I think the steering column rattle is a different issue and pretty well known...there's even a TSB on that if i'm not mistaken. May have to investigate the firewall situation though...Thanks for the heads up.

Re: 2014 V6 Rattle?

The steering bracket does have a TSB out on it but any newly manafactured units have had the bracket issue fixed before delivery I was told. It sure would be great for all involved if the "rattle" was infact "something" and not just valve train "normal" noise.

Re: 2014 V6 Rattle?

My dealer (St Clair Jeep) checked the car yesterday. Took the tech for a ride, he could hear the noise too. His intuition was that it was wind noise. The noise is quite faint and does sound like wind noise but, since it can be turned on and off with the gas pedal, it's not the air blowing by the body. Cracking a window made no difference.

He checked for codes - none found. He checked for relevant tsb's and star cases - none found. He opened a star case and will see if any new info is forthcoming. He said it is definitely not pinging and there is no issue driving the car. He also said 99% of the people would never notice the noise and that he would not have either except that I pointed it out. I agree with this.

They wrote up the service order noting slight noise verified by tech but no solution. At this stage I'm happy with the service response. I certainly don't want them tearing the car apart without knowing what the root cause is and the complaint is documented. If it gets worse I'll go back. If not its not that intrusive.

After I came home I looked under the car and found a bracket securing the trans cooler lines to a bolt on the pass side just aft of the wheel was loose. It was held on by a cheezy sheet metal star washer. I screwed on an M8 nut to tighten the connection. Made no difference in the noise.

Thinking about the mechanics' wind noise comment, I wonder if we are hearing air intake noise? It's independent of rpm, vehicle speed (except that ambient noise drowns it out at about 45 or 50 mph), only happens order moderate acceleration. Maybe what triggers it is a certain manifold vacuum level? The noise is louder on the drivers side, the air intake plumbing is on the drivers side.

Think I'll do some more poking around this morning.
