2014 WK2 Strange Noises

Just putting it out there to see if anyone else has had any of these issues, or has any ideas. I know these are really odd, and I hope I am explaining them well. I am just really tired of chasing down mysteries. I've never owned a vehicle that makes so many oddball sounds.

1. This morning, while idling at my kid's school in the drop-off line, I started hearing what sounded like a tapping/clicking in what sounds like the roof once in a while. It was intermittent and no pattern. After dropping off my kid, I messed trying to reproduce the noise, and I found if I idle the car while leaving it in Drive and I have my foot on the brake, it's the only way I can make it happen. Note that it's really intermittent, sometimes takes a minute or two. It's a loud click though, almost like water dripping onto my roof from a height (no, it wasn't raining here ). I've heard all the relay clicks and all that from this car in the past, and I am sure this is new.

Caveat: I know cars can click or whatever when idling as certain devices turn on and off. I have Auto Climate on, and it is warm today. I also know that it's hard to localize a noise in a car when you're sitting there. I am pretty certain it sounds like the click was above and behind me, but I am not 100% sure.

2. Even stranger, after I was hearing the tapping above, when the drop-off line started moving, I started to hear a significant howl/hoot/tooting after I released the brakes and was rolling forward. It stopped when I braked, then started again when I released. Rinse and repeat several times in the drop-off line (all the time moving very slow). I have NOT been able to repeat this noise. Is this just a morning noisy brakes issue?

Caveat: I haven't ever had my brake pads replaced, as the service guys said I haven't needed it yet. I have about 37k on my Jeep.

Any help or insight is appreciated!

Before we can offer suggestions about what to look for, we, as the members, need some more info on your jeep: trim, options, engine, add-ons?

Re: 2014 WK2 Strange Noises

The tapping noise sounds EXACTLY like water dripping on the roof.

After some more experimentation, I've noticed that it happens even after the car is off, and only in the mornings. What I am wondering is could it be a temperature change issue, like the way a house settles? I keep my car in a garage overnight. Here in Maryland, we've had really diverse weather, with 40 degree nights and 70 degree days. In the morning, I suspect the car is warming up as the sun is hitting it. I don't recall hearing the noise on overcast days, and I don't recall hearing it as I drive home (because the car is at outside temp by then?). This is all guesswork though. I've never known a car to make heat settling noises in the roof (the same pops and cracks you hear when you shut your car off and your exhaust instantly cools), but if it does it when the car is off, what else could it be?

Even stranger, this SEEMED to all start when I drove with the panoramic sunroof open last week. Don't see why that would matter, since the car is doing it when not in motion, but mentioned it anyway.

In reply to the other user, I have a 2014 WK2 Limited with 3.6 V6 engine. Not sure what other options besides the sunroof are relevent to the roof sound.

I pulled into garage turned off jeep and I heard the sound. As I sat there and it picked up speed then stopped completely. I might try and see what happens after I run rear wiper cause where does that line run.

Re: 2014 WK2 Strange Noises

The tapping or clicking sound, could it possibly be the exhaust heating up and cooling down? My aftermarket exhaust on my Tahoe clicks loudly while car is running and after I shut the engine off when the pipes are cooling down.

Noticed it getting off work. The sun was out and I could hear it standing at back. Then got home and sun went away and started raining. I will get video later.

Re: 2014 WK2 Strange Noises

The howl I bet is the brakes. Would not worry. Will probably vary by season and age of pads.

Was gonna suggest thermal expansion on the first but you guys beat me to it.

I started getting this same type of sound - and it is annoying as hell. Were you able to resolve the issue?

I have a 2014 Limited Hemi. Today I noticed the "tapping" when stopped at a light. No rain - but it sounds like a drop coming from a distance falling onto the roof (somewhere near the back of the vehicle).

Re: 2014 WK2 Strange Noises

Unfortunately, not yet.

According to some of the other threads on the subject, the noise is related to the rear spoiler. One person tried spraying WD40 where the spoiler contacts the glass and found that it improved the situation. I tried a silicon spray and while it did help for a short time, the noise returned.
