Exclamation 2014 WK2 - What color is power steering fluid?

The dealership that has my Jeep right now is telling me that it should be a clear/green/yellowish color but mine is red and they have no idea what it is. I bought it new on October and it has only been serviced by the dealer I bought it from until now (we moved from VA to HI). It did need some work done to it after I hit a deer, but I can't remember if power steering was affected or not. I'd appreciate any help you guys can offer. The dealer it is at now is pretty confused and so am I.

Re: 2014 WK2 - What color is power steering fluid?

Depends on the engine you have, but if the fluid is red then that is basically atf-4/steering fluid which would be correct

Re: 2014 WK2 - What color is power steering fluid?

I have the 3.6L V6. She said they're still trying to figure everything out since its so new they haven't had any issues before which makes me wonder if there is a different color for Hawaii models or 2011-13s.

Thanks, but not really what I was asking. I need the color of the fluid if anyone can tell me. I just got off the phone with the dealer again. They're still saying that there is supposedly no way the PSF should be red, but it hasn't been touched in about 3 months and a couple of thousand miles. I don't know how it could be the wrong fluid and I never had any problems. The dealer it is at now is saying that they were advised by tech support back on the mainland that they would have to replace pretty much every component for power steering which would be over $3,000 in parts alone. I'll call the dealer who I bought it from and has done all the prior service first thing in the morning, but I'd really appreciate any help you guys can offer.

Who serviced it after you hit the deer? Don't you have any paperwork, from whomever serviced it or insurance, that shows what was done?

Re: 2014 WK2 - What color is power steering fluid?

Yeah I found all of my service records. It was serviced by the same dealer's collision center. They needed to fix some AC components but nothing for power steering. I just talked to an SA there and he looked up my records saying there's no reason any of his guys would touch the PSF because of the low mileage.

Its not possible that the mechanics with it right now are looking at the wrong thing is it?

ETA - just in case anybody else has a similar issue, the 2014 has a greenish colored PSF while older models (I don't know if that means 2011 through 2013 or earlier than that) have a red fluid.

Re: 2014 WK2 - What color is power steering fluid?

I just happen to have a bottle in my kitchen..

However, big one, this fluid is for NON-Electric racks. As in early 2011 3.6 jeeps and all hemi's. later 3.6's with electric and diesels w/electric racks require the hydronic fluid, that is green/goldish tinted clear fluid. Sorry I do not know much past that. Your Vin should make this a ten second nonissue for a remotely competent dealer, or call it in to another dealer, there's always one willing to help somewhere.

Best of luck

Re: 2014 WK2 - What color is power steering fluid?

Thanks guys. It does have the red fluid but is an electronic pump so either it came that way from the factory or a dealer put it in at some point. To make it worse, the dealer I took it to said they don't have the kit to do a simple flush so they'd have to do some massive process taking some gear off and then they'd have to align it and it'd cost over $800. I'm taking it to another dealer soon, hopefully they'll be a bit better equipped.

Re: 2014 WK2 - What color is power steering fluid?

They are right it should be hydro fluid, not red. But..
I doubt it came from the factory with red if it is a 3.6, built past Aug.11. period. Someone screwed up and is lying..knowingly or not. The 3.6 has used hydro fluid for long enough that the factory has it down.

Both fluids are technically "hydrolic" fluids and will work as pressure lubricants but the red fluid will eventually destroy the later pumps and seals as it contains a different additive package, viscosity, etc. The dealer should very easily be able to do a fluid exchange, any dealer, if not or they say boo, they're being lazy and lying. There's a dealer procedure for both with and without the "special" tool. And after jeep had tens of thousands of people pouring ATF+4 into pumps instead of MS5931 I think that was the number. They'll all have equipment for the procedure on the current models.

My manual says nothing about hydro fluid as it wasn't used yet, Jeep is famous for printing two or more manuals for model years in this case your picture is dead on..Thank you jeep.

Someone screwed up and topped it off with the wrong fluid., simple, techs didn't and don't care, some will grab whatever is on the bench using the old logic, "it's all the same" it says power steering, yes it still happens. Some techs are amazing others are a nightmare, a few rotten apples though...

Go elsewhere and document this while being completely honest and thorough with the next dealer. They should be very receptive and a good dealer will be 100% aware and sympathetic to your issue.
