2015 G.C Altitude A/C problem?

Hey all,

Brand new member here that just bought a new 2015 Grand Cherokee Altitude. I've owned a few cars, and been on many vehicle forums and this community seems like one of the best.

So to the question:

I love the vehicle, but there is something that strikes me as odd and just want to check with you guys to see what it might be.

When I have the A/C turned on, I hear what might be the A/C compressor keep turning on and off. It happens about every 5 seconds continually. Inside the vehicle I hear a "whooshing" sound every 5 seconds, and when I have the hood open and A/C running, I hear a clicking sound and fan like sound. I've never had a vehicle do this before.

And something that may or may not be related at all, when I turn the car on, the air duct unit behind the dashboard makes a weird crackling sound like it's an old 70's car that's changing the direction of the airflow you want.

Anyway, what do you guys think?

It's all normal. The compressor cycling and those sounds are pretty common to all HVAC systems in cars... even the one you had that you claim didn't.

Thanks for the reply, but there is no way the compressor cycling on and off every 5 seconds is normal.

I did a bit of searching and it seems this could happen if the freon is too low or too high. But it could be something else entirely.

The Jeep is brand new with 700 miles on it. I have no idea why it would do this.

You asked, I answered. If you don't want to believe it, that's fine. I can pretty much guarantee you that the dealer's going to tell you it's normal as well.

Re: 2015 G.C Altitude A/C problem?

Hmm? Does the Altitude HVAC run a single knob temp control or does it have the Dual Zone that's in my Limited and above trims?

If my compressor runs for a 5 second cycle I don't hear it ( dual zone temp). I've been critical on the HVAC system in the past and hearing it (too loud) has never been a problem.

Won't be back in my '14 Limited for a couple days, maybe others can reply.

Re: 2015 G.C Altitude A/C problem?

I experienced excessive AC compressor cycling on my 15 Limited a week after purchasing. Dealer discovered the AC system came under charged from the factory. Filling the system fixed the issue.

If your system is blowing cold air then warm and repeats, you might want to bring to the dealer.

Re: 2015 G.C Altitude A/C problem?

Unlike cars of old when if the a/c is on the compressor runs, todays cars cycle the compressor to save gas. After all, this will save the world from global warming.

That said, every few seconds seems excessive. I would spend, and maybe waste, the time taking a trip to the dealer.

Please keep us updated.
