Re: 2015 JGC Overland 'Service Shifter' light

I know this is an old thread, but I wanted to let y'all know that they fixed the "service shifter" problem with my Jeep. It no longer dings or tells me to service shifter when going around left hand turns.

I was doing the Lemon Law route, and GA law says the dealer gets one more chance to fix the problem. Apparently they called in an expert on the Jeep electrical systems and they found a pinched wire on one of the buses that sends signals to the transmission. When the steering rack moved or hit a bump I guess it was causing the pinched wire to send a faulty signal or something like that.

Anyways its fixed. It would have been difficult to sell otherwise. Now I will either trade in/sell and get a '17 Trailhawk I have on order.

Re: 2015 JGC Overland 'Service Shifter' light

Mr. Plow, thanks for validating my long term strategy: someone, sometime, somewhere is going to find something that seems to fit my experience, and yours does. Pinched wire really fits the data, not just turns but bumps when turning (I think the parallel is how my back acts when I move too quickly when bending and kazaam, pinched nerve every time). I had not thought of invoking lemon law--I've taken mine in twice with same problem...

Re: 2015 JGC Overland 'Service Shifter' light

Yeah I'm pretty sure the dealer would have kept me coming back and changing components here and there until I got sick of it and quit. It seemed silly to use the lemon law for such a minor issue, but it forced them to go "all in" and bring in an expert to fix it. In the end it was a simple fix, just difficult to find and diagnose. I'm happy it was not a potentially serious issue and that it is over with. There are certainly those out there that have had far more frustrating situations, so I consider myself fortunate.

Re: 2015 JGC Overland 'Service Shifter' light

I joined this forum specifically for this thread. Just bought a 2016 Overland High Altitude EcoDiesel, and after 3 weeks, I have this exact issue... I have not taken it in yet, but wondering if everyone's issue is the pinched cable?? I'm surprised this is so wide spread and there's not more information on it... I called the dealer and they had not heard of the situation. My experience is almost identical, left turns, only when I have been driving a while, and not all the time... Worst kind of problem to troubleshoot... Any advice is welcome...

Re: 2015 JGC Overland 'Service Shifter' light

On a new thread I started, I tried to capture my 'showdown' with dealer (I gave him copies of notes from this forum, inc Mr Plows). I then gave him specific directions on what I am doing when MIL SERVICE SHIFTER comes on. I offered to take him, mechanic or service manager for a ride to show MIL. My service guy said he was not allowed to road test, mechanics are not allowed to ride with passengers and service manager was not available. Naively thought they would make an ernest effort. I thought they would have to keep the jeep for a few days for repair, another problem n 10k service. Instead, they called the next n said it was ready. I asked if they found n fixed the problem, agent said, the jeep was running fine. I asked if I could drive the jeep before turning in comp rental, he said no. So when I got there n asked what they did, he said installed computer updates n that sould take care of the problems! Then, of course, on drive home I got MIL. I will say MIL has decreased in frequency (used to be that any left turn w bump in road produced it). Now the jeep has to be warm, usually has to be going at least 30 mph n road on left turn is bumpy. MIL almost always occurs initially when make sharp turn in. It just feels like the problem is caused by a body/suspension roll pinching a wire or harness. Really too bad because I love the jeep. Yesterday, my wife left LA for Las Vegas, along w several thousand people. Traffic was 2-3 mph at 215 junction. I could see train tracks coming down the Cajon wash n a service road next to train tracks. At about 5 miles people in sedans were turning around, dirt road turning to one lane n mud holes everywhere. One guy in a van stopped me n said he had gone to the end n could not go further because to high streams n mud over top of tires. I forged ahead in Mud selection n copilot screaming "if you don't turn around I'm walking back to LA, but i forged the streams, slipping n sliding all over the place but never a moment where forward progress was in doubt. Connected to a 2 lane, paved country road, reconnected to 215 n got to vegas an hour earlier than original navi est. That's why I love the jeep n hate FCA service. let me know I can provide any other details.

Re: 2015 JGC Overland 'Service Shifter' light

Taking it into the shop next week, will report back if they find anything. Great off road story, first jeep, good to know it's not just marketing and they're actually "trail rated".

Re: 2015 JGC Overland 'Service Shifter' light

I just purchased a 2017 GC Trailhawk. I am getting service shifter lights since 1000 miles. I'm taking it in tomorrow. I sure hope I don't have this same problem.

Mine comes on right at startup and doesn't allow me to shift out of park most the time. If the shifter lever does allow me to move it doesn't initiate a gear anyways. I have it parked with the e-brake just in case it decides to ghost ride off the driveway tonight.

Maybe I'm a freak coincidence, but sounds very similar to what 2014-15 models are seeing?

Re: 2015 JGC Overland 'Service Shifter' light

**Update** Just got my GC back last night after two days at the dealer, of course they were not able to reproduce the light, but I don't think it was from a lack of trying. They were very thorough. I think it helped that I brought a copy of this forum with me. They flashed the software, and I'm hoping that does the trick. I see some were able to stop the shifter light with the software update. Next week with regular driving will be the test.

And the light came back on, software flash didn't work... Back to the shop Thursday... Sigh...

Re: 2015 JGC Overland 'Service Shifter' light

**Update 2**

Just got my GC back, and supposedly they found a smashed cable the same as Mr. Plow... They kept it for four days and again were very thorough until they also experienced the issue, and had to hook a computer up to it when the error was occurring. Hoping that's the end of it. Will report back if not. Also if anyone has this issue, i'd suggest printing out this forum and taking it in to the dealer, i think it proved helpful in rooting out the pinched cable. Could save you a couple of trips and a lot of unnecessary hassle.

Re: 2015 JGC Overland 'Service Shifter' light

Well, I sincerely hope this resolves the issue for you, it's a pain to have an MIL popping up with something that could be consequential. Smashed cable sounds like it could be serious, who would know what the cable would not be able to control or what other cables might be affected. Really interested in whether your MIL returns. Thanks for posting.

Re: 2015 JGC Overland 'Service Shifter' light

**Update Final!**

Fixed, the pinched/smashed cable was the culprit, no service shifter light since getting back four days ago, I certainly would have had issue by now. Thanks for all the feedback y'all. I hope this helps others.
