2015 Overland... tranny blown

Just purchased a 2015 Grand Cherokee Overland less than two weeks ago. Today I driving down the road and all of a sudden I smell a pretty bad odor as I'm about 1/4 mile from home... as I get closer to home and the engine light comes on it is stuck in 5th gear and tranny fluid is leaking down on the ground... what would you guys do? Obviously get it to the dealer to get fixed but should I call Chrysler and tell then I want a new truck? The truck only has 400 miles on it.

The first thing you have to do is have the dealer look at it. It could be as simple as a loose hose or another minor problem that can be fixed very easily. If it turns out to be a blown transmission with only 400 miles then I would worry. There are more than a few posts about the lemon law which will answer most of your questions. Hopefully it's just
something that wasn't tightened at the factory and your off enjoying your new Overland for many trouble free miles.

Get it to the dealer. Call Chrysler roadside assistance and they'll send a flatbed to bring it there.

The first one I had did the same thing at 369 miles. Check engine light followed immediately by erratic transmission behavior. Pulled over, fluid everywhere. A transmission cooler line was touching the front driveline and wore through. Long story short, I got Chrysler to fund the trade to another new Jeep.

What did you say to them to fund the trade?

I'd be worried about residual damage from what appears to be significant fluid loss--on a transmission somewhat noted for "quirks".

If you can't get a replacement vehicle, I sure would push Chrysler Assist to get an extended warranty specific to the transmission unless they replace that entire unit.

Re: 2015 Overland... tranny blown

I actually just got the truck back... The transmission was not blown ... A bit of a over-reaction on my part however the transmission cooler line was apparently loose and came off and all of the fluid came out. They put the hose back on everything seems to be ok... Should i accept this as a suitable answer or should i be worried about the future and push for a new truck?

Like posted above i would be worried about risidual damage if you were driving the jeep when "all of the fluid came out". How do you think that transmission liked running without fluid or as far as it would go without fluid anyway. May be running fine now but has its life been shortened? Who knows. I wouldnt accept simply tightening the line and adding fluid as the fix if it were me. Get them to throw in the extended warranty or swap it out for another jeep. make sure this is all well documented because of course the dealer will just say everything is fine now and leave you holding the bag if it fails early in a few years. Years ago my mom destroyed a transmission on her car by running it with very low fluid over just a couple days. Just me but i would be on the phone with chysler ab
out this if it were me. Good luck

Definitely ask for extension of powertrain warranty, or if you plan on keeping the car long term try to get Chrysler to give you some sort of concession towards purchasing a lifetime bumper to bumper warranty. I would contact Chrysler to accomplish this rather than going through the dealer.

It was a long process. I first got involved with Jeep customer service which was almost no help at all. They were really there to be the interface between the dealer and I.

I wrote a letter to the lady I was working with at Jeep citing the safety concerns: broke down on 70mph freeway, possible fire, probable transmission damage, oil in components under the vehicle as well as the fact that the owner of a brand new $50k vehicle should not have to deal with doing Chrysler's quality control. I also stressed that it's no longer a new vehicle now that a significant portion of the components under the vehicle had to be R&R'd to get the hard metal line replaced. They even had to go back and forth with engineering for four days to figure out how to get the job done.

After that letter was sent (more like faxed since their email system is complete BS) they escalated me to the "resolution team" which eventually came up with $3000 toward a trade. I found a dealer that would give me enough for the trade to make it work and ordered a new Jeep. I ended up spending about $700 out of pocket, mostly for taxes. I consider it fair since I drove the first one about 2500 miles before I traded it.

Re: 2015 Overland... tranny blown

Luckily my line coming off was a simple fix.
I called Chrysler and complained and they offered me 12 free oil changes as well as 8 tire rotations. I guess for a simple part coming loose thats not so bad. The only bad part is my driveway is filled with fluids that they say they will not be responsible for...

The part to remember is that your transmission may have been damaged internally from driving it without the proper fluid level. It may run fine now but could also end up failing prematurly. I wouldnt be satisfied with a few oil chages for taking a risk like that but its your jeep if it pleases you thats all that matters.
