2016 3.6 issue - surging/hiccup while cruising

Only about 300 miles in after picking up my new 75th laredo last week.

I notice that at steady cruising I get what feels like what I can best describe as a hiccup for a split second - almost like the feeling you get when you hit a puddle at speed, where you, for a brief second, loose forward momentum.

Happens every 10 or so seconds and I don't see any variation on the RPM. engine and trans both operating at normal temps. Transmission also stays in the same gear. Usually notice it most around 35-40. Tried re-creating whilst parked by trying to keep a steady 2.5.3.5k RPM while in park and dont notice anything there so thinking its the transmission.

Any thoughts of what this could be? Obviously will bring in for service, but this is pretty subtle so I just see them claiming operating within specs. Also its 2WD so no transfer case involved here.

Thought it might be bad gas from the dealer, but idle is rock solid as is full revs. I have also since replaced the dealer gas with a new fill up.

Re: 2016 3.6 issue - surging/hiccup while cruising

Had a buddy in the car today and he confirmed it as well. He likened it a fishing sensation, just a gentle tug back.

Not a fan of problems like this on a brand new car. I know I have read on here some similar problems but that was well before 2014 when the switched to the new 8 speed. I am assuming this is an issue with the Torque Converter. Again, I can floor it and its a smooth run up to redline, no hiccups during acceleration that are noted - just when cruising at constant speed.

Edit:

Stopped by the dealer, tech rode with me and said 'its normal, I don't feel anything' - which was just about what I figured would be the case.

I bet its a downshift. Look at what gear the trans is in. I bet it will have gone down to 6th or 7th.

Def not a downshift, car stays in the same gear and RPMs don't fluctuate as it would on a downshift - it does have the same feeling as a downshift thought.

Are you sure you are not feeling the AC compressor kicking on and off. I've seen them kick on and off that frequently if the refrigerant pressure was low and that can feel like a hiccup.

Thought of that so ran last night so today with AC powered off and it felt like it was still doing it.

However. Ran the car at idle when at operating temp with the AC on and I do hear a clicking to the right of the engine about every 8-14 seconds. Assuming this is the compressor is that too often? Maybe that is th issue?

Re: 2016 3.6 issue - surging/hiccup while cruising

Update: Just got back from the dealer. They had their master tech ride with me, confirmed he felt it 'feels like a slight shudder' while cruising. At that point they really were stumped at what to do so they reset the TCU. They said being so new there are no flashes or updates for the transmission so they are at a loss. The contacted Chrysler and their recommendation was to run the tank empty and try a new tank of gas. Bad gas was my first guess when this started happening so I have already done that, filling up with 93 octane Chevron just for added measure, I am now 1/4 into this tank so that is not the issue. Besides, idle and acceleration are smooth so I just don't see it being the engine (in my amateur opinion of course.)

On the way back home the problem is still there so I called them back. Service advisor said he would get with the Service Director to see how to proceed so waiting for that callback.

Frustrating to say the least on a brand new car. The problem does seem to be getting worse so hopefully the worse it gets the easier it will be to diagnose. Had the car for 700 miles now since new - safe to say the honeymoon ended right around 100 miles when the problem started. This is one of the reasons I spent more on a '16 over a better deal on a '15 - in reading all the transmission issues with '14 and early build '15 figured they would have this solved by now.

Re: 2016 3.6 issue - surging/hiccup while cruising

That sounds very much like a quirk I had in an Acura years ago related to the VVT (variable valve timing), except mine only happened under specific circumstances (climing a hill under a specific throttle range) and it would surge/stall in a steady pattern every second or so. Actually stall is not quite the word to describe it, it would be more like if I had the throttle at 25% and then let off to 20%, then back to 25%. I learned to feather the throttle on that hill to avoid the issue and then eventually something "wore in" and it never did it after 10K miles or so. We never proved it was the VVT, but that was the working theory. A high-end scanner may be able to detect VVT changes if the engine computer knows about it.

Re: 2016 3.6 issue - surging/hiccup while cruising

Was told today that given the symptoms and relative new nature of the car a STAR case was opened up. I am dropping off the car tomorrow and will be put in a loaner while they consult with field engineers.

Anyone ever been in this spot care to comment on typical outcome?

My 2015 was built June of 2015 and has transmission problems. You avoided nothing by going 2016 other then being a guinea pig for a redesigned motor, unfortunately.

I bought a 2015 GC in 2016 on purpose to avoid the "refresh" of 2016, because I don't want to be a guinea pig.

It's definitely good that a STAR case has been opened for your vehicle, hopefully they will be able to get to the bottom of your concerns. Be sure to keep us posted as things progress! - Jack, Jeep Social Care Specialist
