Hi everyone. It's been a little over a year since we traded our 2005 WK in for a Hyundai Santefe Sport 2.0T. Well a year to the month we traded that in and leased myself a 2016 Hemi Ram Express 4x4 quad can and my wife a 3.6l GC Laredo.

She loves it to death but it does one annoying thing.

Randomly while driving with the headlights on they will flicker.

They are Oem projectors but I do not believe they are hid.

Can anyone help explain this headlight flicker?

Thanks

Hi NHWK05,
Happy to hear your wife is loving her Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo! I would be more than happy to assist you in scheduling an appointment for a diagnosis with a certified Jeep dealer. Feel free to PM with your VIN and contact information and we can look into it further if you are interested.

My '15 does the same thing, for a while I thought it had to do with my TBI from the military. Doesn't bother me enough to take it in... Think it happens a few times a week and probably has something to do with a voltage spike i.e. the alternator starting to charge, A/C compressor kicking on..?? I figure that for a dealership to "fix" it, they have to replicate the issue... I'm a maintenance technician for industrial equipment by trade, and can't begin to explain how many times a day an operator or engineer tells me of an issue that I can't fix because I can't make the machine do it again. For them to diagnose, they likely need to hook a computer up to the OBD port and datalog until they repeat the flicker, at which point might "never happen" for them.

I'll subscribe to this thread...If you find out what the issue is let me know, and vice versa if I find out before you.

Is the issue on both sides? I'm assuming that it is because you didn't specify. Is there a loose fuse? Does it happen when another piece of electronics kicks on? Does it happen when you hit a bump?

What bulb type and designation are they?

Hopefully it isn't anything too crazy to fix. Electrical problems can be tough sometimes. If the problem is on one side I would have recommended switching bulbs from side to side to diagnose further.

In my case the issue effects both left and right halogen headlights. Some people with HID's seem to describe a rapid fluttering or constant flickering, appearing in some uploaded you tubes. My issue is a very quick single flicker happening once every 10 minutes or so on average, but can happen seconds apart or as much as 20 minutes apart.

I've attempted to observe what may influence it, but I can't find anything. Auto vs manual on/off lights, A/C on/off... being a Laredo, there's not a lot of electronic variables to test or for the gremlins to hide in...

Yes, it happens with both lights. They are the projector lights but I'm not sure if they are hid or not. I have not checked.

I cannot associate any other function with the lights flickering. It's completely at random while driving. I have not been able to get a matched time between flickers and it's not effected by road conditions.

Yeah I've got a headlight flicker as well I see it maybe twice on my 20 min drive home in the evening. It's very short but the best way I can describe it is it looks like the alternator isn't powering the car during that flutter. The headlights quickly dim looking like a car that is drawing power from the battery.

I'll bring it up during the first oil change but probably wait to have them dig for it until April when I get my other car back on the road.

Take it easy
Jay
