2016- V6- Funny rattle on start up?

1400 miles on the car.

2 times ive noticed the car rattle for a few seconds on start up. It definitely came from the engine bay, loud like a can of screws being shaken.

It only lasts for a second or two and goes away right away. It never happens again once the car has turned on, no matter how many times I cycle the ignition.

Seems its only happens on cold starts in the morning.

Has anyone experienced this? Is it a piece of heat shielding rattling?

I haven't experienced any rattling as you described. Open the hood in the morning and see if you can pin point it. Could it be the valves opening up on cold starts?

The thing is, it happens on random cold starts. Not every morning. Only twice so far in the last 6 weeks.

That's the worse... Too intermittent to diagnose.

Like they said try and diagnose by starting the car while you're under the hood. Not sure if remote start will function while the hood is open, so you might have to have someone else start the car for you. I know you said its intermittent, but just try it on the cold starts and see if you can atleast pinpoint the location.

I was thinking my oil was low and components weren't lubricated on a cold start until the oil has moved around but dipstick looks ok. Oil pressure is good as well.

Re: 2016- V6- Funny rattle on start up?

So I found this after some research:

"The Pentastar has hydraulic valve lifters and sucks at keeping oil in the top of the motor after it's shut off, so the oil typically drains out of these hydraulic lifters. Unlike solid lifters, these need to be pressurized with oil to "self-adjust." The motor might need a second or two to get oil back into them after startup, and thus you hear a rattling for a few seconds within the lifter until it pressurizes with oil. It doesn't help that half the motor is plastic, which doesn't do anything to muffle the sound. "

I've heard this on my 13 JGC, and the dealer said it wasn't an issue. Heard it on a couple of the loaners they gave me too, so I'm inclined to believe them.

My 2013 Chrysler 200 made the same noise on almost every start up. I seldom drove it, so it sat for long periods of time. I think it's a characteristic of the engine.

My 2014 Overland has been doing this for a while now too. Good to know it is normal. Thanks!

That start up noise is very much normal. Leave it alone, run it and enjoy the vehicle.
