So bought a 2017 with the 3.6. It seems that FCA changed the intake tube routing and it appears in the way of removing the oil filter housing cap. Does anyone know if the intake tube needs to be removed or is there enough room to unscrew the cap and remove the filter without damaging anything? Not ready for an oil change yet but want to be prepared for when the time comes. Thanks

So nobody knows for sure if the intake tube has to come off? I know the '17s are still very new but was hoping somebody who owns one or a tech would chime in. Just an aside does anybody have a link to the 2017 service manual? It should be spelled out in there.

Im interested in this too, just got a 17 Altittude and come to find out there is no plug n play catch can install for this. Engine cover seems like a pita to take off.

Service manual would be good.

The intake tube does not need to be removed but removing the engine cover makes filter removal much easier. Very simple to remove engine cover. 10mm (IIRC) socket removes the engine cover screw then the cover pops out of four rubber grommets. 24mm short socket (intake tube does get in the way of an extended socket) removes the filter cap.

FWIW, I ran across this on the National Oil & Lube News (fast lube and quick maintenance industry’s oldest and largest trade publication [their description]) web site. Even considering the source, it may be worth remembering as a precaution.

Chrysler’s 3.6L Pentastar Engine

A high failure rate of broken bypass valves continues to be reported on the Chrysler 3.6L Pentastar engine. Vehicles have been serviced and customers allowed to leave with broken bypass valves and missing springs. Lube service technicians have seen the loose components and heard the springs when they dislodged during a filter change but failed to identify the damaged components as a part of the bypass valve. The bypass valve on the 3.6L Pentastar engine may be positioned in one of two locations:

1. 2011–2013 vehicles will incorporate a bypass valve mounted in the oil filter housing. If the valve is damaged, the complete oil filter housing must be replaced.

2. 2014–2016 [and 2017] vehicles will contain a bypass valve mounted in the oil filter cap. When removing the oil filter from the cap, pull the filter straight from the cap. Do not rock the filter back and forth to release it from the cap, as damage to the bypass valve can occur, requiring a cap replacement.

It is imperative the vehicle does not leave the service facility with a damaged or non-functional bypass valve, as engine damage can result.

Extended Service Intervals

Vehicle manufacturers are promoting extended service intervals, as it helps sell vehicles. With today’s powertrain technology, synthetic lubricants can last 12,000-15,000 miles. Conventional oil filters are not designed to provide protection for that length of service. Vehicles driven for those service intervals should be equipped with an extended life oil filter. Operating a vehicle under an extended service interval with a conventional oil filter is playing Russian roulette with the engine. A lot of attention is given to the lubricant with little consideration as to how long the filter will last without bypassing.

So I performed the first oil change today. I removed the engine cover and removal of the filter cap was fairly easy. The intake tube was only marginally in the way. Next oil change I am gonna try it with the engine cover on. The cover comes off easy but I have a habit of breaking things.

The thing I like about removing the engine cover, apart from it's a 3 sec job, is the fact that you can easily place a rag around the filter housing to prevent any residual oil from dripping into the valley next to the heat exchanger.

I think removing cover is best. Held on by a screw or bolt.

Not to thread jack but is it true the 3.6 MY17's REQUIRE synthetic oil? 0w-20 is what the manual but dealer is charging arm and a leg for it. Rather do it myself.

Cool. Crazy stealerships charge $80+ for oil change.

Remove the engine cover to have easier access to the filter cap. You can get to it without removing the air tube. Be aware when replacing the filter/cap that you torque it to 18 ft/lbs...... how do I know this?.... beacause I cracked mine due to over tightening and it only cost me $700.00 to have it replaced ?

Which cover did you remove, the oil filter access cover or the engine cover? When I did my first oil change on my 2018 3.6L I didn't even bother with the smaller oil filter cover, I just removed the entire engine cover. It was very easy to work on after that and no problem with getting a socket to fit correctly on the filter.
