2017 Trailhawk, LED DRL issue

So my new Trailhawk with 1100 miles has the passenger DRL that doesn't always fire up. I noticed it in a picture the other day, then went outside and looked and it was fine. That night as I pulled into the garage, I noticed there was no light shining on that wall. Went and looked, and it was on. Then this morning I went to drive and noticed it was off again. Any idea what the issue could be? Or do I just need to make a trip to the dealer? The only thing I've done in that area is swapped out headlight bulbs to OSRAM CBIs. But it's been fine for a couple weeks since I've done it.

I'd check all the electrical connections at that headlight first. May be just as simple as a loose plug. If you don't have the desire to do that, take it to the dealer.

There's only 1 connection on these headlights, but I'll try accessing it to jiggle it around.

Yeah there is no jiggling. Go to dealer. Probably needs replaced

Set up an appt but they can't get me in for over a week. Hopefully it resolves itself. I haven't heard of anyone else having this issue with just one headlight. It comes on sporadically too. Hopefully nothing major.

Re: 2017 Trailhawk, LED DRL issue

So I checked that the connector was plugged in all the way, it was. With just my parking lights on, only the drivers side had the led and parking light reflector illuminated. Both weren't working on the passenger. Went in and turned on the headlights and the led and parking light lit up on both sides, as well as the headlights. Clicked it back to parking lights and both sides stayed illuminated. That's pretty much what keeps happening. Upon start up there's nothing, then it comes on a little while later. I'm not sure if the headlight being fired up is a direct correlation or not.

Re: 2017 Trailhawk, LED DRL issue

I had a little more time to try and troubleshoot. Apparently the issue is full power to the DRL. When I turn on the headlights, after a few seconds the DRL will turn on half power like it's supposed to. Then, if I turn off the headlights and turn on the parking lights, the drl on the passenger side will stay lit at half power and then shut off a few seconds later. This happens every time, so at least it should be easy for the dealer to duplicate. Anybody out there have any guesses what it is? Faulty headlight? Issue with the PWM system?

Re: 2017 Trailhawk, LED DRL issue

Sounds like a faulty headlight. I would have the dealer replace it.

Re: 2017 Trailhawk, LED DRL issue

I would swap those bulbs out for the stockers, just so the dealer can't blame you for anything. I've been down that ugly road and it's not fun.

Re: 2017 Trailhawk, LED DRL issue

Well, I figured out the issue. Unfortunately it was my fault, and luckily it wasn't too expensive. So back when I swapped my bulbs I did it thru the top of the engine bay and while trying to shove the bulb into the clips I bent a couple.
After installing, the bulb alignment was terrible. So I pulled the front bumper and headlights and did it that way. I should've done that in the first place, I've installed so many hid kits in these that I can do it in 10 minutes. Anyways, when I went to bend a couple of the clips back they snapped off and fell into the headlight. I turned the headlight upside down and one fell out so I thought that was it. It was not.

I had some time off the other day so I pulled the front bumper again and headlight to check it out. I took off the LED controller underneath the headlight and gave it a little shake. I could hear something rattling inside! I shook it upside down and out fell another clip. It's basically a circuit board inside so I knew I shorted something out. I reinstalled everything and it still didn't work. So I ordered a new controller from a wrecked 2017 headlights and installed it today. Everything is now back to normal! So be careful if you install new bulbs... don't force it! Treat it like a lady and don't just go ramming it home the led controller is at the bottom of the headlight and acts like a funnel.

Holy smokes dude! Did you use a sledge hammer during the install?! Ouch!

Thankfully you were able to get it resolved on your own. I should have warned you about the possibility of bending tabs during the install if you aren't extremely careful. I've never broken them clean off though - now I know to be even more careful.

Hahaha yeah I know it's a little intense. It didn't break off until I bent it back too. Too be honest, I was pretty frustrated and and to be somewhere mid install so I just pushed as hard as I could and it sunk in, then I locked it in. I must have just taco'd the clips! That was when the alignment was off. All is well now though, and the bulbs are looking better everyday. Well, as good as the crappy hids in these can look. I'm still juggling around the idea of retrofitting them.
