Re: 2nd Key FOB battery died

I'm going to keep monitoring this thread but so far no issues with my fob (I only use one regularly and the other is on a hook in our key cabinet). My situation is a bit different since I work out of my home office. I don't carry keys or the fob with me unless I'm heading out. Otherwise it sits on the kitchen counter.

I'm also not a devotee of skinny jeans. The dogs need room to run.

While I am able to use the fob from inside to start or unlock the vehicle (discussed in another thread about inadvertent remote starts and poss CO buildup in a closed garage), I don't think it's a proximity issue. Maybe the technology is way different than past fobs I've used, but I used to keep my keyfobs in the vehicle when they were in the garage. Never had a single battery die on me. As far as the wifey is concerned, it's also amazing I never had a vehicle stolen. That's another story.

Re: 2nd Key FOB battery died

It is a PIA (again if its anything like the mercedes system which based on my limited use is).

Here's what I typically buy:
http://www.amazon.com/Energizer-2032...7&sr=8-2&rps=1

For $1 each it was just easier to switch batteries.

Wife got key not recognized yesterday, Today I was showing a co-worker the car with it started he got out and walked away and the display said key left vehicle even though the key was in my pocket... GM (Corvette/Cadillac) system works MUCH better, and love their proximity autolock function.

LW
I was getting same things happening as you, and another thread gave instructions for FOB reset by momentary battery removal then replace, and it fixed my problem. Just a quick way to try?

Wait so your saying the Jeep will not automatically lock when you walk away? wtf, I thought that was the whole point behind these systems? I dont have my Jeep yet but in my C6 vette you literally never touch your key fob and I assumed thats how the Jeep system worked to. It unlocks as you walk near the car then locks as you walk away. The Jeep does not do this?

It unlocks when you put your hand on the handle, some sort of senor underneath. When I leave the vehicle I usually press the button on the handle to lock it. I am not sure if it will lock as you walk away I'll try tomorrow, but I don't believe so. So technically I don't ever touch the key fob either as its all the handle of the front doors.

Nope.

As said, the unlock is handled by a sensor in the front door handles (either one). If the key is within a few feet, putting your hand around the door handle, it will unlock the doors. Pressing the button on the rear hatch will also unlock the vehicle.

For locking, you still don't need to touch the key. Just push the button on the front door handles (or the one on the rear hatch), and it will lock. It's still easy to use and unobtrusive.

Re: 2nd Key FOB battery died

I haven't tried this yet but...The car is suppose to still start even though the battery in the fob is dead. Right? I mean I've never been worried because the emergency key inside the fob opens the door and then the fob should still work to start the car.

Maybe you need to actually remove the "start" button and insert the fob with the dead battery to get it to work. The RFID chip in the key should be powered by the car if it is close enough to the power source. Kind of like the ID badges that unlock doors at work.

Chuck, unfortunately that does not appear to be the case. If the FOB loses power, removing the start button and inserting the FOB doesn't work. You may want to check out this thread: Stranded - Key FOB to Blame!

Re: 2nd Key FOB battery died

I too would have thought it would still work even if the battery is dead if the fob is inserted manually. My last Chrysler had a chip in the key but with no battery. The car would only start if that key was programmed. You would think that it should work in a similar fashion. It seems not...but I bought 2 extra batteries anyway!

The system starts acting crazy when the battery gets low, and they die fast. I found with the Mercedes the batteries are not dead when the remote stops working, they work fine in other remotes/devices for quite a bit longer.
I have had a MB for 6 years now and the battery is still fine. I have never had a key fob battery go dead in ANY car I have had. (knock on wood)

From personal exerpience only it DOES work. I have had 2 FOBs die on me while away from a working FOB. Here's the procedure:

1. Take out hidden key from FOB
2. Use it to unlock door.
3. DO NOT OPEN DOOR YET (due to alarm sounding).
4. Put Key back in FOB.
5. Open door and quickly get in (because the alarm goes off)
6. Pull start button out, put FOB (not the key ) into the start button recession and turn like a normal key.

This works just fine with a dead FOB. If it didn't it would be moronic engineering to strand people because they key FOB battery died.

Re: 2nd Key FOB battery died

Redbolt,

I just read your post in the other thread. I did the EXACT same thing you did. I tried to put the actual key in the ignition and almost got it jammed in there.

One question for you, did you put the "hidden FOB key" back in the FOB before inserting the FOB and trying to start? That sounds like the only difference between our two scenarios.
