1. Take out hidden key from FOB
2. Use it to unlock door.
3. DO NOT OPEN DOOR YET (due to alarm sounding).
4. Put Key back in FOB.
5. Open door and quickly get in (because the alarm goes off)
6. Pull start button out, put FOB (not the key ) into the start button recession and turn like a normal key.

This works just fine with a dead FOB. If it didn't it would be moronic engineering to strand people because they key FOB battery died.

This is helpful and I am committing it to memory JIC. Question about step 6: is there any particular technique for popping that Start button out? Thx.

No, unless you have super sausage fingers you can sort of grab and "pry" it right out of the socket. Not a problem. I would suggest doing it now to get the feel for it. The first time I had to do it the alarm was blaring whilewe were at a funeral and my wife was yelling at me to turn it off! Needless to say I wish I had done it once before

Now I feel like a car thief. I can jump in, pry it off, start the Jeep, and silence the alarm in about 5 seconds.

Thanks, I just did that. I found that the screwdriver tip on the Swiss Army knife I keep in the center console was perfect as a non-marring removal tool.

Not related to the dead fob battery issue, but last night I was leaving an indoor tennis facility and fished out my fob to show my buddies the remote start. I accidentally pinched the Panic button while fishing it out of my tennis bag and the dang thing went off from quite a distance away. Not that I'm going to complain about a fob that is too strong...my buddies were actually impressed at the ungodly reach of the thing.

One question for you, did you put the "hidden FOB key" back in the FOB before inserting the FOB and trying to start? That sounds like the only difference between our two scenarios.

-Ryan
No, I did not. The emergency key was out of the FOB when I tried to start the car using the FOB. Does that make a difference?

I'm crossing my fingers that I have the same experience with the jeep. Just a little skeptical after wife and both received key not recognized messaged in the first week of owning and multiple key removed messages.

We typically replaced the batteries long before they actually went dead just because we seemed to get less errors with fresh batteries.

Re: 2nd Key FOB battery died

Just got my 2011 Jeep Overland, it has 250 miles on it and my FOB was dead this morning - I figured out how to open it, took the battery out - put it back in and all is fine. Never the less I'm on my way to the store to get two fresh cr2032 batteries.

I wonder if its not the battery but the electronics in the FOB are locking up?

Re: 2nd Key FOB battery died

Could it be that the original battery is crap? Some no-name china battery perhaps?

I don't know, but I think that's the only difference between how you and I tried to start with the FOB. I'll have to try taking the key out of the FOB and attempting to start. I'm guessing the key has to be in the FOB so the RFID (or whatever chip is in the key) is close enough to be read.

I hope so, replacing each FOB since Jan 1st is either a FOB lockup problem or poor batteries in each.

Re: 2nd Key FOB battery died

I look in the manual (DVD) and could not find how to replace the battery in the FOB. Do you just pry it apart?

Owner's manual page 25-28. Remove the emergency key, use it to pry the case apart using a notch that is uncovered with that key removed. Swap out battery, snap back together. Do be careful not the break the seal in there.
