Re: 2nd Key FOB battery died

Are these fobs constantly transmitting or only when they are in a close proximity to the vehicle?

Re: 2nd Key FOB battery died

Interesting discussion. Mine is 7 months old, 9900 miles, daily driver and we have had no key fob problems. We keep our fobs hanging on the wall near the door into the garage when not going for a drive.

Re: 2nd Key FOB battery died

I dont know if it is a FOB issue or battery issue, but it seems I have to be about 10-15 feet from the truck in order for the FOB to work. Kind of frustrating because in my limited (overland now) I could be 300 yards from the jeep and remote start it..... Tried both keys with same result, I'll pick a new battery up for my 2week old jeep with ~700 miles on her....

Re: 2nd Key FOB battery died

Hmm. I can be a long way from my Ltd. and start it with the fob. I don't know if 300 yards is the number. Probably a little closer and I could not even see the vehicle that far away! Our fobs hang on the wall about 15 feet from the vehicle, so in theory they have been in communication with the vehicle 24/7 for 7 months with no issues. (Knock on genuine imitation wood trim.)

Neither. The FOB only transmits when you push a button. The passive entry mechanism uses an RFID chip; it's energized entirely by the transmission from the car, like security tags in a clothing store.

Re: 2nd Key FOB battery died

So theoretically, if you never press those buttons, the battery should last about ten years. My last vehicle didn't have RFID so I had to use the buttons all the time. The battery lasted about five years. The Jeep does have a longer range though.
