3.6 Overland - Shudder? while in idle but driving in a parking lot

Has anyone experianced a shudder condition while in drive but at idle around a parking lot? I think the correct term is shudder. The car is in auto mode and when I drive in a parking lot it speeds up ad slows down. Mainly occurs when just starting the car after its been sitting. Its not super bad but I have never felt this in my previous vehicles.

Can you give us more info about what exactly is happening? You are idling in drive and it speeds up and slows down on its own? Is it sudden, or gradual?

The only thing I can think of is maybe the high idle at start. I've noticed the pentastar is programmed to high idle for a little while at startup, then after a minute or so it gradually fades down into a much lower idle.

I think he is saying that in a parking lot, as he speeds up then lets off the gas it makes the noise. Mine does the exact same thing and is going back to the dealer on Friday - I'll let you know if they find anything. It appears to be diff related.

Its when I start up the car after shopping or something similar. Back out of my parking spot then start driving out of the parkign lot. As Im moving forward and let off the gas, I can feel the car pull and slow in waves (no Noise). Its as if I am using a stick shift in first gear at low RPMs but not as bad.

Does the noise sound like its coming from the driverside rear of the Jeep? This is what I am experiencing

No, I really dont hear a noise the car just pulls at idle. Let me know how your problem goes and what they find. Hope its an easy fix.

I think I have the same problem you are talking about. Is this noise from the rear when just idleing through a parking lot? The dealer already replaced my rear diff and also the brakes and I still have the noise.

Sounds like the same issue. At first I also thought it might be brakes but I usually get the sound after lightly applying the brakes, releasing and then coasting. It also seems to do it more often when the Jeep is driving just off centre - for instance if I'm driving straight and then ever so slightly turn the wheel to one side.

They put an additive of some sorts into the rear diff on my first visit to the dealer and it did reduce the sound but the noise is clearly still there. Hopefully the service department can diagnose the problem tomorrow - I will pass on any info they give me.

Just wondering if you were able to get any information on this issue.

Re: 3.6 Overland - Shudder? while in idle but driving in a parking lot

No, our whole house came down with a nasty flu so the dealer visit was postponed until wed. I will post an update once I get some more info to share.

Over the last few days I have started to think that the sound could be a wheel bearing. Not only does it sound similar to a failing bearing it is also inconsistant and changes in volume after parking for a peroid of time - one day it's there loud and proud then the next day I have to listen very hard to hear it. The noise also seems to have some sort of corelation to the speed the wheel is turning.

I had thought about a wheel bearing as well, but normally a wheel bearing would make more noise as you speed up and then be louder on turns. This noise is just on coast at low speed maybe 5mph. Then recently I noticed you could hear some noise from the rear coasting at about 25 if you make a slight turn in the wheel. In both cases stepping on the gas makes it stop which tells me it's in the drivetrain. My dealer compared it to a new one off the lot and says under those conditions made the same noise. So now they have referred it to chrysler engineering and waiting for an answer.
