3.6 Pentastar Oil Leak

Found an oil drip in the garage today so I crawl unde the Jeep to inspect. Here is what I found.

It looks to me as if there is oil leaking out of the round holes in the bottom of the transmission housing where it bolts to the engine. I dont know what it could be unless it is a rear main seal leaking? I cleaned the area with degreaser and wiped it down really well so I can monitor it.

I pray this comes out to be nothing but after my last episode with this vehicle I have my doubts. I am at 43k right now so would powertrain warranty cover this?

Re: 3.6 Pentastar Oil Leak

obviously i dont know what it covers but im guessing leaks arent covered? the engine is part of the powertrain is it not?

just looked at warranty and seals are listed
found by googleing jeep warranty info
looks like youre covered

crapola, just saw you have 43,000 miles.....extended coverage???

have you checked the top of the motor to make sure its not a leaky valve cover gasket, just making its way down the motor

Im under the assumption leaks arent covered either but I dont know. Just waiting to see if it comes back after I have it clean and trace it down for good then talk to the dealer if I need to.

Re: 3.6 Pentastar Oil Leak

This looks like a rear main seal and yes leaks would be covered under the powertrain warrenty.

Re: 3.6 Pentastar Oil Leak

After sitting all night I checked it again today and there is already a good drop starting to form under the bellhousing. Dealer says if it is the rear main seal it will be covered under warranty but if it is something that is external like a valve cover then it will not be because the warranty says it only covers internal lubricated parts.

Spoke with them again. They said they cannot submit a claim to Chrysler for warranty until they have diagnosed the problem for sure and it is 85.00 diagnostic fee at first but to verify a rear main seal leak the transmission has to be pulled out to diagnose and would be at least 600.00. About my luck.

Re: 3.6 Pentastar Oil Leak

the transmission is part of the powertrain so y would u have to pay anything not ur fault its in the way. in addition i would think any mech worth their weight would take one look at it and know from experiance what it is..I should expect the diagnostic fee would be returned to you if in fact its something that is covered. I think you need to call some other dealers, seriously. Sounds like they are setting you up for a shafting in the ol wazoo!

Thats true they cannot submit a warrenty claim until they diagnose the problem. They will be able to tell you if its warrenty without pulling the trans.

So they can verify a rear main seal leak without pulling the trans?

Here is the oil 1 day after cleaning it up. Drove approx 60 miles.
