3.6 V6 Idling too fast

I start my car every morning with the remote starter so it can run about 3 to 5 minutes and get properly warmed up before I get in and drive off.

This morning I didn't notice it right away that it was idling fast but it did notice it sounded louder then normal in the driveway.

When I put it into gear it doesn't jerk or anything.

Since this morning each time I start the car the idle shoots up and takes more than a minute to before it slows down to the bottom of the green section in the tachometer. This has been happening whether the car is warmed up or not.


Has anyone else experience this racing idle that seem to be 500 rpm higher than it used to? I was hoping someone had taken their car in before so I could tell the service guys what to look for, this is weird that a car with just over 4,000 miles could be having some sort of vacuum leak so early. I hope it registers a DTC so they can narrow down the cause.

Now I will have to wait until tuesday to take it in service does not open on Saturdays

It could just be doing that when the engine is colder than usual, how high is the high idle you are talking about?

I have a somewhat related issue: when I start the Jeep in the morning there have been a couple of times when I accidentally hit the accelerator as I am putting on my seatbelt or whatever. Now most cars if this happens I hear the revs go up and move my foot no big deal. The Jeep however will keep revving up to about 4k rpm and stays there. I don't know how long it stays "stuck" but at least 15-20 seconds. I have tried hitting the gas again and hitting the brake, but the only thing that seems to work is if I shift to drive. Then the RPMs will drop to normal idle. It's almost as if the first bump puts it into an anti stall mode or something but it doesn't recover very quickly at all. Any ideas why it would do this?

I thought back and realized that I had accidentally stepped on the accelerator pedal at the same time I had hit the start button. From then on the idle would shoot up every time I started it.


So I decided it could not hurt to do the same thing the next time I remote started it,

Here is what I did:

I mashed the pedal hard and it actually hit the rev limiter then stalled (cut off).

Then I restarted the engine and the idle settled down to where it should be and since then if it is already warm it will idle at the correct speed once it is already warm.

Pretty weird but it is working fine now.

This happens to my V6 as well sometimes. I have just over 3050 miles on the odometer. On starting it will sometimes idle around 1800 rpm and it takes about a minute to settle down to normal idle rpm. Looks like this is a common problem with the V6 if it is a problem at all. Anyone talk to a service department about this?

Don't know if this helps since I haven't noticed it when I start my car, but my 98 Ford Ranger (bought new) was set up to rev higher (500 or so rpms) for a short time when the car was started. It was stated in the manual or something. I'll check back tomorrow to see if my Jeep does it too.

If you don't hear back from me, the Jeep doesn't do it.
