3 day old jeep - issues already!

So long story short I picked up a brand new 2012 CRD (in Australia) from the dealer on Friday and happy as Larry I decided I'd give it a whirl off road. Did alright for road turrets but I ended up sliding off a muddy track into a rut full of water about 30 cm deep. Only the passenger side (left) went in the water and it only just went over the bottom of the door. Having no front tow hooks make the recovery much more difficult but after about an 45 - hr or carefully manoeuvring buy the recovery vehicle and some well placed rocks I was finally out of the rut and on my way. Driving home I heard a sloshing sound under the feet of the passenger and when I got home did a bit of poking around and saw a considerable amount of water in the spare(?) battery area under the passenger seat. Curiously I checked the battery compartment under the driver seat which was never close to the water, and it too had water pooling. As you do, I jumped an jeepgarage and did a search and saw some others have noticed water pooling here. I followed mentioned recommenations a pulled out some rubber gromets (followed by a steady flow of water).. after I drained as much water as possible the jeep seemed as good as new (as you would expect with a brand new car) until the next day when I left home I noticed the esc error light was on then when I was pulling into the shops after a 30 min drive when the wipers started going off. Thinking the move from sun to shade managed to trick the sensors. Thinking nothing of it I turned the jeep of and went about doing my business. I got back started the jeep no dramas and the wipers started again and nothing I did turned them off. Eventually I noticed the whole indicator stalk wasn't working, nor were any of the button on the steering wheel. A call to jeep assist and a visit by roadside assist didn't help so back to the dealer this morning. Call this arvo saying they will be keeping it for another day or two saying the clockspring was broken which caused some of the issues. So what is the clockspring? And could being bogged and water in the foorwells cave caused the issue?

Sorry to hear .You may have shorted out some circuits?
Anytime water has gotten into my vehicles,strange things have happened.
Leave it to your dealer to sort it out.

The clock spring is like a long wire wrapped around the steering shaft that maintains electrical contact to the steering wheel controls when you spin the steering wheel. Your water would have no effect, but perhaps vigorously turning the wheel while you were playing or recovering may have exposed a manufacturing defect sooner than later.

I had never heard of an automotive clockspring before. Perhaps defective clocksprings could explain why some WK2s have shut off while turning.

The easiest way to see or understand a clockspring is look at a bike and how it allows you to spin the handlebars with the cable attached... Same thing. Next the hole under the passenger seat is the us gas agm battery location

So called Clocksprings in steering wheels became commonplace 20-30 years ago or so when air bags began being installed. Airbags need reliable, shock resistant, low noise electrical connections. The most common symptom of a bad clockspring seems to be the horn going off when you turn left or right.

Hopefully you get things figured out especially since its so new. However, I will say I was a little mislead with your title.
Sure, anyone would expect a new vehicle to operate correctly and most certainly being only 3 days old, but when I saw your title I thought these were legit issues at 3 days old. Not until I read your description did I see you put the thing in water lol. Cant fault the Jeep for having electrical issues after partially submerging the vehicle.
As your finding out electronics and water do not mix hopefully they can figure it out. Hope you dont have any warranty issues either because they may find some moisture in areas. Keep us posted.

Should find out more today but if its rated to a fording depth of 508 mm the bog I got it in should have been an issue. Furthermore, putting electrical components at a low point (if it was a short circuit that caused the problems) seems like an odd move by jeep. I don't see how this isn't a legitimate issue, many people will/have taken their keeps offroad and through water. The water pooling has been identified by others and from what I have read some people seem to have a lot more sitting water that I did however it never broke their clockspring

I personally think they're unrelated items. It's entirely possible that the clockspring was faulty to start with and that needs to be replaced.

yeah got it back on wednesday, they reckon the clockspring was unrelated to the water. Seems to be running all good now so im happy, just need to find more money to add the underbody protection, rock rails, A/T tyres and the front tow hook!!
