30,000 Mile Drivetrain Service?

Let me start by saying I have no issues with preventative maintenance. I believe in it, and its a large reason why I keep cars for well over their warranty period with zero issues.

Keep in mind my Jeep is a '15 GC Alltitude with about 30,000 miles on it that I bought in June of '15.

I called to schedule an oil change this afternoon, and was told my car was due for a number of service items. I had no issue dismissing the recommended fuel injector cleaning and brake fluid flush as unnecessary, but I was also told I was about 2,000 miles overdue for a drive-train service.

I asked what the drive-train service involved, and basically its a flush of the diffs and transfer case. I checked the service interval guide, and saw nothing about this, especially this early. When I asked why so soon, it was brought up we see both sides of "extreme weather" in Chicago, and that's why they recommend it so early. I was also shocked to see a fluid change almost cost $500.

So my point for posting; is this as much BS as I think it is? A diff t-case fluid flush before 50,000 miles seems ridiculous, especially considering the Jeep maintenance guide lists it at 120,000 miles. Granted I tow a boat for three months out of the year, but that is limited to certain weekends and short trips on a flat highway. I just wanted a few opinions before I make a decision.

Yes it is BS and they are trying to pull one on you. I'm glad you asked here first before doing it. A lot of times it's someone posting here after they did the service. Some stupid dealers even still insist on 3k/3mo oil change intervals. Sooo annoying. You're doing the right thing by following the manual. Stick to that and don't let a dealer try and screw you.

Re: 30,000 Mile Drivetrain Service?

If the OP does not already have an Owners Manual, go to Jeep.com and get one.
That manual contains the official service and maintenance schedule, which if it hasn't changed is pretty minimal:
Inspect cv joints
Inspect transfer case fluid
Replace engine air filter--the only replacement item mentioned.

Oddly enough the only item the OM mentions for severe duty is more frequent oil changes, unless the newer OM's have a separate severe duty schedule.

If there is another servicing dealer convenient, you may wish to pay them a visit.

You only visit the sales department a few times.... the service department is the one where trust in the minimal amount of bovine excrement from them is more important.

Re: 30,000 Mile Drivetrain Service?

Yes, Jeep has changed service items and intervals since I had my 02.

Front and rear diff's and transfer case fluid were listed for change at 30K miles. That service ran pretty close to $650 back then if i recall.

There's nothing in the maintenance schedule for that on the WK2's under normal operation.

I appreciate everyone's feedback. I guess I need to find another dealer for service.

Jts97z28, Plainfield isn't far from me. What dealer do you go to for service?

Re: 30,000 Mile Drivetrain Service?

When I was in my dealers for a re-flash a few months ago, I asked if they recommended T/Case and Diff servicing as my JGC was coming up to 30k. They said not to waste my money...not necessary, even though I do about 50 percent of my mileage towing a 4600lb TT.

I will definitely do the service at 50k though.

Re: 30,000 Mile Drivetrain Service?

I tow and did my front and rear diffs along with the transfer case. The fluids run about $150 - $200. I did it myself and it took about an hour. My mileage was 50k. Unless you tow a lot or use the Jeep for severe service doing it at 30k is a waste. The manual says no change at all for normal operation. I disagree with that. I just do it at 50k intervals. Gear lube is a lot cheaper than a new diff. I plan on doing a trans flush at 100k. HTH.

Here's a free PDF owners manual: http://www.wk2jeeps.com/manuals/2015...manual_7th.pdf

The paper copies are nice to quickly go to what you are looking for and to keep In your glove box.

Re: 30,000 Mile Drivetrain Service?

I did my front and rear diffs at around 25k. Rear needed to be changed, oil looked bad. Front could probably go another 10-15k.

I would do it but the price is wrong. It is easy DYI but get a hand pump.
