30,000 mile service

Just brought my 2011 Overland in for the 30,000 mile service. Service advisor at the dealer told me what was needed:

Oil/Filter
R&R Transfer Case Fluid
R&R Front & Rear Diffs Fluids
R&R Air Filter and Cabin Filter

Had it all done and was rather surprised to get a bill for $700.00!!

Also, nothing was said about Spark Plugs. Do they need to be done?

Re: 30,000 mile service

WTF, $700! you just brought the Jeep in and didn't think to ask what it would cost? You know you can change the cabin filter yourself in about 5 minutes all for about 20 bucks or whatever the filter costs?
Engine oil change? I dunno 40 bucks at most.
And front and rear diff fluid?? Is that even required so early on a normal duty use vehicle? Transfer case fluid is even easier to do than the engine oil. Ugh, glad I know better than to fall for the shady dealership antics.

Sorry to be harsh man, but seriously ask us FIRST, not after you do something goofy like that.

As far as spark plugs I think the older WK2 with V8 asks for plug change every 36k which sucks. 2014+ V8 is 100k thank god.

Ooof! Sounds like they got ya.
The T case and diff fluids were not due. Even under the severe service schedule, the TC isn't due till 64k miles.
There are mixed feelings on the diff fluid. Technically, if you tow or fall under any of the other severe service categories, the diff oil comes out every 24K miles. Otherwise there is no specified service interval. IMO, it should go no further than 64k miles even under the best conditions.
Oh, the plugs on the HEMI are due at 32k miles.
Does the service paperwork have your work request on it? Something like "Customer requests 30,000 mile service?" If it does, then I would go back and tell them you want your money back for the services you did not request.

Re: 30,000 mile service

Yeah, my own stupidity for not asking "how much" before hand. I've used this dealer several times, being the dealer I purchased from and had developed a certain amount of "trust". This was rather trying however.

I'm not so concerned about the work performed however. Certain maintenance schedules do call for Diff Fluids to be Changed as well as the Transfer Case Fluid. Granted, it's only 30k miles on the clock, but it is going on 5 years old and would rather be safe than sorry. I've got a 1998 Grand Cherokee Limited with 270k on the clock (I'm the original owner), and have learned the value of "preventative maintenance.

Surprising it doesn't call for a radiator flush or tranny service. Guess the modern fluids used in those systems can got a lot longer.

Will address the plugs in the next few thousand miles.

Re: 30,000 mile service

That's what i was thinking, your ride is an older wk2 so changing it after 5 yrs is not a bad idea but none the less it was pricey. Doing it your self may have been much cheaper if your a DIY kind a guy.

**EDIT**

Forgot to mention, i'll be crossing that bridge in another 7k miles. The bumper to bumper expires at 36k???

Thoughts?

Re: 30,000 mile service

Agreed. Still wonder about coolant & tranny fluid after 5 years??

I bought the Lifetime Bumper to Bumper Maxcare Warranty when I purchased the vehicle cause we plan on keeping it.

Coolant is 5 years or 100k.
Trans, as with the T case is 64k (or 6 years)
The correct maintenance schedule can be found by downloading the 7th edition owners manual at Jeep.com. The file name is "2011-Grand_Cherokee-OM-7th". It shows the accurate "check" or "change" schedule.

30,000 mile service

At 30k and 5 years i think the air filters were way overdue. Diffs probably didn't hurt to do. I did mine at 25k and oil looked bad ...

T-case ... Not sure. 30k seems to be a bit low on mine 2014 it is not due until 125k.

Overall I think what was done probably should have been done but I'm not sure about the price.

Parts cost:
About 40 for filters (20 engine and 20 cabin)
About 40 for oil plus filter 20 extra for synthetic.
Diff fluid 3qt x 45 if they used mopar 75w85 - 135 total
T-case probably around 15 for atf fluid

230 total for parts alone plus tax. To change the fluids is very easy since they all have drain and fill plugs. With car up, very easy ...

Tranny on my 2014 has fill for life so technically should be good for the life of the tranny. Not sure about 2011-2013.
