Finally got the chance yesterday to play with the 4-Low and Hill descent...
And like the title says, I got a "clunk" when switching in to 4-low, and a louder clunk when turning it off. During my drive, I went in and out of it a couple of times, and each time got the same, loud metallic clunk.
My question: is this normal/expected? I haven't had a vehicle with 4-Low since my Dad's old F-150, so I really can't remember. thanks!
If it works the same as all other Jeep 4low transfer cases you need to be rolling about 2-3mph, shift transmission to neutral, then engage/disengage 4low and then shift back to drive. There may be some noise as the gears change but it shouldn't be overly loud.
That's about how mine works, can take several tries and there tends to be a noise. It has always seemed perfectly normal to me considering what is happening. Maybe a background with the big manual levers of yore colors my view on it.
Then maybe a few more tries, see if it is just a break-in thing-- but I won't be out of town while I do it. I do like this car, but don't want to get stranded!
