Re: 5.7 Disappearing Coolant

That's a good sign if the oil was clean. Let the dealer do the tests under different conditions. The interface of the block, head and gasket is pretty complex. Leaks, cracks or gaps may exhibit themselves under different combinations of temperature and pressure making them elusive sometimes. I'm sure with time that they will find the problem. Frango100 had some good points!

Re: 5.7 Disappearing Coolant

Thanks Frango, I do hope its something simple and the dealer checks ALL of the simple things before they do unneeded invasive disassembly. Cheers!

Re: 5.7 Disappearing Coolant

Got car Jeep back today/nite and still evaluating...
I'm in a mixed place right now - happy they really didn't find anything.
But concerned that there is no explanation. I would wager that its not over.
I'll be pulling the rad cap in an hour. I'll get some pics.

Annoying: Engine compartment was spotted with dried spots (white-ish) all over. Engine cover was not snapped back into place - just resting there. Front of grill all spotted as well. Black grease and dirt from the service apron all over front too. I've told them I keep it pristine. You'd think maybe they could at least wast the part they gunk'd up.
I'm obviously smelling coolant as its obvious nothing was done to clear the car or the engine compartment.

Still no contaminants in oil. Looks good.
The dealer made good on a comparable rental for the day they had it this time.
Stay tuned.

Re: 5.7 Disappearing Coolant

Very clean under the radiator cap. No brown paste-like jelly. Did not even see coolant level looking down into it. Reserve tank is mid-way between full and add. Video attached.
I plan to keep an eye on it. It needs a good washing to rinse out the residue left that sprayed around in the engine compartment as it was worked on. There's now way to tell if the smell is from this repair residue or a new leak.
It may take driving thru a few good rain storms.

Re: 5.7 Disappearing Coolant

Disappointed to report that about a month after service, my coolant reserve tank was bone dry AGAIN.
Not sure what to do now. I have engaged Chrysler Assist via email and phone and so far they have not made any actionable difference in the entire situation. They basically listed two other dealers in the area with poor service ratings as well.
Next I'm studying the Lemon Laws for the state and the related info I got when I purchased this Jeep, not even a year ago.
I cannot keep bringing this new vehicle back to the dealership every month. This could end my 13 yr run with Jeep for another make that can provide quality service.
Thank you all for your input and responses.

Have you tried "Jeep Cares"? Call this woman Andrea 248-309-2688
She helped me with a PS problem. Seemed to be effective at dealing with the dealers

Re: 5.7 Disappearing Coolant

+2 on first thought was head gasket. What I am thinking is a head was not torqued properly and is sealing when cold and seeping when hot. This will not show up on a simple cooling system pressure test when cold & mechanics do not like to work on a hot engine.

It *might* show up on a leakdown test and a dealer must have a leakdown tester to check Pentastars.

For something slow like this with no external leak I'd probably just retorque the heads first. Has that been done ?

What gets me is "smelling coolant, no sign of leak" would match a very slow external leak dropping on an exhaust maniford or pipe.

Re: 5.7 Disappearing Coolant

Thank you padgett, may have something there.
I do not know if the dealer looked at a torque down on the head. I was given the standard "they're testing it" BS idiot customer response.
This is part of the bigger issue, is that the dealer that has been trying to fix it does not provide a clear picture of what they are doing.

Motor in this case is 5.7 HEMI, not a Pentastar… had one of those in my 2012 GC, great motor. never had a problem.

Re: 5.7 Disappearing Coolant

This is where the Jeep cares came in handy. I was having the same problem with the dealer being vague. She was effective at getting them to clarify what exactly they were doing to correct the problem and then explaining it to me. They paid a whole lot more attention to her questions than mine.

Re: 5.7 Disappearing Coolant

BTW meant that because of the Pentastar TSB which mandates a leakdown test, any dealer should have the equipment to do one on a Hemi. Realize you have an iron block engine that should get more expensive gas.

ps shouldn't talk, my crossie wants 91 octane and has 12 plugs.
