Re: 5.7 Disappearing Coolant

Had not known of a leak down test, so thanks for that. This is where I need to rely on the Jeep Cares process. New car, etc.
When I bought it they advised I only need to run reg gas. I've seen other owners suggesting mid-grade or at least alternating each tank. So I've done that.
No huge difference to me. Again... no expert... just driver. Thank you!

Re: 5.7 Disappearing Coolant

The owner's manual specifies 89 PON for the Hemi (page 498 of the '14 GC OM 8th - "The manufacturer recommends the use of 89 octane for optimum performance"). Have no doubt 87 is probably ok with light loads and engine coolant temp under 200F. If it goes into knock retard though, MPG will likely head for the basement and so will power.

ps it also says "This engine is designed to meet all emissions regulations and provide satisfactory fuel economy and performance when using high-quality unleaded gasoline having an octane range of 87 to 89." Though I wonder if 87 is OK only over 5000 feet. YWTK

Re: 5.7 Disappearing Coolant

I feel for you Spaceghost... I experienced the exact same problems that you're having, including the white-ish spatter all over the engine compartment. I was also having TIPM issues and the day that I took my car in for servicing, it ended up dumping all of the coolant out in the service deptartment driveway. They said the water pump had gone out (25k miles) and they replaced it at no charge. Keep an eye on your power steering fluid... had to add some to mine a couple of weeks ago. Haven't had any TIPM issues until this morning; car shut off as I was exiting the freeway.

Re: 5.7 Disappearing Coolant

FWIW: My 2011 HEMI had disappearing coolant also. Eventually diagnosed as a leaking water pump, which was replaced.

Re: 5.7 Disappearing Coolant

Update on issue:
After processing a Lemon Law claim start, FCA sent me a letter and set a "final repair attempt" appointment with the repair center that had worked on it all-along.
You could imagine my reluctance to take back to the same place that had failed to find the problem on previous attempts/visits. An FCA rep met me at the repair center and I went though all of that with him, drove and examined the car.
The next afternoon the service manager called me, said it was ready. This time they replaced the radiator explaining they had found a small leak. Coolant was weeping out so slowly it would burn-off before it was detected on ground, etc. They said there was also some crud around the Water Pump, so that was replaced too. TG for warranty.
Had car in possession for 3 days now and I think they got it.
I'm just hoping now that FCA will compensate my hassles with this one-year-old car by extending the warranty or some other "soft-cost" offering to make good to a loyal Jeep owner.
Thanks to all that added value to my thread here and extending my general knowledge base. Cheers, SG

Re: 5.7 Disappearing Coolant

You might want to invest in a few oil analysis samples to make sure no coolant is getting into the oil.

You would want to send in a sample of the used oil for the next couple of changes, the lab can monitor any trends and detect any coolant.

these would be good data, you dont want coolant weeping into the oil.

Re: 5.7 Disappearing Coolant

I had the issue of disappearing Coolant thought I could see no visible leaks or pooling, and engine wasn't over heating. I would top off reservoir and a couple months later it would be low. The leak gradually got faster and faster and eventually found it was the tank separating. $325 installed with new coolant for a new radiator at 46,000 miles...

Re: 5.7 Disappearing Coolant

I recently took my jeep in for the TIPM recall and the SA noticed a very minor leak under my Overland. They actually determined the liquid on the ground to be from a previous vehicle, but upon inspection did find a very minor leak from my water pump. They replaced it that day. My Overland is just over 25k, which seems to be a fail point as others have reported their water pumps going out around that mileage.

There was no coolant leak noticeable on the ground under my vehicle after parking all night, prior to taking it in to the dealer. Either it just started leaking on the way there, or it was leaking but not in a noticeable way.

Hopefuly when replacing the radiator, they also checked the water pump?

Re: 5.7 Disappearing Coolant

Just had my water pump replaced too. I first started smelling coolant and found it leaking from the overflow tube just below the radiator cap a few weeks ago. I put a hose clamp there, where I could see it was seeping out. Topped off the coolant, and thought I fixed it. Watched closely for the next week, until I saw coolant on the ground. After close inspection, I could see coolant stains coming from the water pump area and running down the hose. After seeing this thread, I was pretty sure that was it. Dealership confirmed it and replaced both the water pump and thermostat. My Jeep had about 23800 miles on it.
