5.7 Disappearing Coolant

Sorry about the novel… but a bit of set-up,
I mentioned to dealer during first oil change I smelled coolant. They said they did an MPI and all fluids were checked green in the inspection report. Went back for an exhaust upgrade mentioned I still smelled coolant and the level looked low in the reserve container. Nothing was done until I picked it up and asked if they had looked at that, which they did not, and they sent a tech out with some water in an antifreeze container and watched him pour it into the reserve tank while I stood there. The third time they had the Jeep, they said they had found a leak and replaced some hoses and the reserve tank.
Two weeks later now… still smell coolant and level has dropped below ADD on reserve container. Plus now I see brown crud, like jelly when I pull the rad cap.
Contemplating whether to return to same dealer who kept vehicle for 3 days last time trying to troubleshoot. Problem is there are not many options that have good service rating.
Any help or wisdom is appreciated. Cheers. SG

Re: 5.7 Disappearing Coolant

Quick Update - got a call from dealer this afternoon… They speculate I may have a blown head gasket. Not even 8K on this Jeep. Starting to wonder….

Re: 5.7 Disappearing Coolant

As I was reading your post and the symptoms, I was thinking "head gasket" all along. That's unfortunate, but that's what warranties are for. I would try to work with the dealer, but be prepared to make Jeep customer care aware of what's going on so that they can work with the dealer to address any concerns that you have. There is a part of customer care called "Jeep Cares" that shows up in some posts in these forums and offers help in these situations. A woman named Andrea was very effective in helping me with a problem. They can discreetly serve as a liaison between you and the dealer if necessary.Do a search for Jeep Cares and see what you think. Vehicles come apart and go back together easy when they're new, I'm sure that it will work out.

Re: 5.7 Disappearing Coolant

Mine leaked too, have you seen antifreeze on the ground where you park it? I did and it ended up being my water pump at ~30k.

Re: 5.7 Disappearing Coolant

Dealer has been diagnosing all morning.
They said they have "block tested" it. (assume that is a pressure test that would indicate a leak at a gasket, i.e.; head-gasket)?
It passed.

They said they have flushed it twice. BG Flush? and Mopar flush…?

The tech reported to my rep he had seen some instances of the new tubing they installed last time having a chemical retain to the coolant - causing a crud-like jelly. (hard to believe tubing made to contain coolant would react to said coolant?)

They plan to keep, drive, store overnight and test/drive in AM.

Isn't brown crud a symptom that the tech put the wrong type of antifreeze in there?
Don't recall head gaskets as brown crud.

Re: 5.7 Disappearing Coolant

Thanks Istowell, I had not considered it was wrong type of coolant - that would be a really careless oversight given this is a Jeep/Chry/Dodge dealer.

As it relates to crud on condition of gasket… it would be the motor oil going by the gasket into the coolant to form the crud…. As I understand it.
But no expert. Thanks

Re: 5.7 Disappearing Coolant

It's been my experience that oil contaminating the coolant would produce an effect like you're seeing. The reverse is true also. What does the oil look like? If the level is slightly overfull and it's milky, could be mixing. Did they do just a simple compression test? These kind of internal leaks are tough to nail down sometimes. It sounds like the dealer is trying, so see what they come up with tomorrow.

Re: 5.7 Disappearing Coolant

Oil has been fine. Was checking that frequently also after I found almost a quart down. Was watching oil pressure and temp displays all the time too.
I'll find out more tomorrow. Thanks all for your feedback.

Re: 5.7 Disappearing Coolant

Since you smell the coolant outside the jeep, i wonder if it would be a headgasket. With a leaking headgasket, or you get a lot of white smoke from the exhaust, or a white yelly type of stuff under the oil fill cap. The dealer should be able to check the oil from any coolant traces.
There is a thread going on on here, from a guy who found some browinsh yelly type of stuff in his coolant reservoir, which finally seemed to be coming from some kind of pill, put in there from the factory. You saw some traces around the rad cap. Since its all hot during operation overthere, any small leak could evaporate quickly and leave only some dry residue. Could be a bad radcap seal for example.
