60,000 mile service - 2014 Laredo 3.6

please allow me to vent here...

called up the local dealer and scheduled myself the 60K service since it's (generally?) a pretty thorough service if I remember correctly from past dealings with new(er) vehicles, plus this dealership has been pretty honest with me in the past.

so I drop the car off and she tells me it's gonna cost $1,150 plus tax. after I regained my consciousness I questioned why, and how it could possibly cost that much. so she tells me after the normal oil change, tire rotations, multi-point inspection, etc... it needs a tune up. this will include new plugs and PCV valve, and full fuel induction service.

after that...it will need the full 4x4 service which includes changing the transfer case fluid.

me being in a rush to get to work and not checking (my own fault) the recommended maintenance schedule, I tell her to just do the oil change and the tune up. I tell her not to touch the air filter since I have an after market filter and that I just did the cabin air filter. she informs me it will be around $700. I say fine and go to work grumpy.

so I do my research later that day. in the manual it states:

PCV Valve - Inspect and replace PCV valve if necessary: 100,00 miles

spark plugs - replace spark plugs (3.6L engine**): 100,000 miles
**The spark plug change interval is mileage based only, yearly intervals do not apply

Change transfer case fluid: 120,000 miles

I take this new found information with me to pick up my car the next day. Perhaps due to my initial concerns, she immediately informs me the plugs weren't changed and didn't need to be replaced until 90-95K bc they are platinum. +1 for her

I then proceed to ask her why I'm being told to get the above service done when it contradicts what's recommended in the manual (I show her the manual with everything highlighted...in pink). she gets on the defensive and after some hemming and hawing basically tells me "well that's the very least you can do to maintain the vehicle. If you plan on keeping it for a while you should do the service now. plus we're in the northeast which is harsh conditions so service should be done sooner than recommended."

mind you, 90% of my driving is highway and I don't tow anything or go off-road

so tell me....with the details you've just been given....is she correct in telling me what she did, that if I cared about my Jeep I should ignore the service manual written by the company that built the vehicle, and I'm overreating. or am I correct for calling her out on trying to sell me unnecessary service.

after all was said and done, my bill came to $431.17

and I'm still grumpy.

Re: 60,000 mile service - 2014 Laredo 3.6

It's sad just how many people fall for this crap. You should have been in and out with a oil change and tire rotation for well less than a hundred bucks. Unreal! I would talk to a manager there and explain what a bunch of hosers and thieves they are. Then have him explain to you straight faced why his employees are lying and telling you to get service performed when the actual engineers clearly state when it's due in the manual.
And damn, 60,000 miles? I think my 2014 just turned 4,500 miles.

I agree with JTS98Z28, your service advisor is full of shit. There is no more of the 30-60-90k miles service crap. If used in normal conditions your Jeep does not have any substantial maintenance until 100k. At 60k maybe an air filter, cabin filter and tire rotation, as stated above less than 100 bucks. You can certainly do maintenance early if you want to but it's kinda like changing your oil early, if it makes you feel better great but it's not necessary. Don't ever believe anything a dealer tells you they will tell every lie they can think up to get to your wallet, always check and verify anything they say.

Re: 60,000 mile service - 2014 Laredo 3.6

I can't stand most of these dealers. I used to have a great one, but they closed their Jeep/Chrysler only location to merge with the Dodge dealer down the street and now they suck. I had one bad experience there and I said never again, but I was in the neighborhood this past Saturday around 8:30 and I needed an oil change. I thought I would give them one more shot and test out their "Fast Lane" as the price is actually very reasonable. I pulled in and they said 2 1/2 to 3 hour wait so I pulled right out. I was also sure they would tell me all the things I needed to service, but I'm comfortable telling them no. I then went to my normal service place and was in and out in 20 minutes, with tire rotation. They inspect everything each time I go in, and tell me when something needs to be serviced. I know they are honest b/c I don't get a sales pitch each time I go in. I have a 14 now, but I had an 11 that myself and my wife put 95,000 miles on and they only time we serviced something was when someone said we should do it, or something didn't seem right.

IMO keeping up with these recommended intervals is overkill. Get the extended warranty, get the oil changed, and service the vehicle when needed. Otherwise the cost of ownership goes through the roof. It's unfortunate how many of the dealers try to rob you blind each time you walk through the door.

You either pay or do it yourself, now i know why all my neighbors with the fancy GTI's, BMW and Volvos whine.

I love a how the new name for Wallet Flush is 30K, or 60 or 90 K service. LOL

CHanging fluids in T-cases, diffs and changing plugs is easy, no need to even send it to the dealer.

Changing plugs on the Hemi is a biatch. I do most of my own maintenance but I'm happy to leave that to the dealer.

Re: 60,000 mile service - 2014 Laredo 3.6

thanks y'all. I was definitely leaning toward having a lengthy discussion with the service manager about this and explaining how he lost a customer over this BS. wanted to check in here first and see if I was overreacting, but it seems like you all agree with me. I'll post the end result of my discussion for posterity/humor sake.

it just pisses me off b/c if this were told to my parents or my wife (or MOST people out there), they wouldn't think twice about questioning the dealership.

still grumpy.

Re: 60,000 mile service - 2014 Laredo 3.6

i get 'free' oil and filter changes as well as a 'dealer backed' 100k powertrain warranty...

bad thing is 'they' "require' me to have all work done there to maintain my 'free' oil/filter changes...

so @ 61k I get the recommended transmission service pitch...

"they" inform me their plan uses the 'extreme' service intervals....
I argued the vehicle has NO hitch, so towing is not a factor, and when it cranks, it is usually on a 10+ mile trip...

i folded... oil, filter, tire rotate and balance and trans service... 324bux....

have not 'hit' me yet for differential and transfer case service, but methinks it is on the way....

pisser is........ week and a half AFTER service.. THEN they come out with a 15% discount coupon

not sure if the free oil changes are worth it.....

Couldn't really have made it any easier, took me less than an hour including topping up my coffee.

Re: 60,000 mile service - 2014 Laredo 3.6

gave them a 0.5/5 rating. my comments:

Quote:
I was told I needed service ($1,100+ worth) which isn't recommended in the owner's manual until 100,000 or 120,000 miles. I believe this was an opportunistic money grab and if I hadn't researched these service recommendations myself, I would have spent a LOT of money getting service that clearly wasn't needed at the time. Due to this, I will not be doing business with this establishment again. This is a shame because I really enjoy the vehicle, but have no basis to trust this establishment anymore. I would be happy to discuss this further with the service manager. My contact information is on record.
