A/C Problem

So I noticed a neon green puddle in my driveway yesterday morning as I was leaving for work. I did what any guy would do.....put my finger in it and then smelled to see if I could figure out what it was. Even put a dab on the tip of my tongue and still couldn't figure it out. It wasn't coolant like I originally thought, so I figured the only other thing it might be would maybe be dye from the A/C system.

So my wife calls last night on her way home and said the A/C is acting up and making strange noises and wants me to go for a ride with her. So when she gets home, we take a cruise around the block and sure enough it's not right. Makes a gurgling sound followed by a whooshing/sucking sound about every 15 seconds. But it's still cooling. So we pull back in the drive and go inside. I promptly grab my flash light and go back outside to crawl under my WK2 to see if I can find anything.

This is what I found....

Not sure how it happened and I'm pretty certain I didn't hit anything since there's a skid plate there. Seems to be coming from somewhere higher in the engine bay and running down the length of the lines. But it's leaking pretty good and made a nice puddle in seconds in my driveway. Had I thought about it, I'd have slipped some Pig Mats under there to collect the drippings, but I didn't until this morning. Good thing I have my JK to drive, else I'd be spending the day at the dealership. As it stands, it's going first thing tomorrow morning. Will post up the outcome when it's all over.

Re: A/C Problem

Okay, so a little update here. No call from my service advisor yesterday, even though when I dropped it off Saturday he told me he'd call by 10:00 Monday. Talked to another advisor who informed me that my advisor had the day off. Strike 1.

Got a call back form the other advisor saying they had my GC all ready to go. Said it was just a little low on Freon, so they evac'd and recharged the system and pressure tested it for leaks and it passed. So I asked the service advisor how that was possible when I physically saw with my own eyes (as did my wife, son, and of course my camera as evidenced above) and he said the tech didn't find anything. I told him I showed my advisor pictures of what was going on and of course that information never made it back to the shop, even though there was a tech looking at it on the service drive Saturday as I was leaving. Strike 2.

So he puts me in touch with the dispatcher and I explain all of what's going on. And being a former service advisor for 8 years myself, I ask the dispatcher what the advisor had written in the description for what I said was wrong. The description read "Not cooling. Has leak." In the immortal words of Arlee Arnee in Full Metal Jacket...No Shit! So I explain the entire story to him and tell him I'll email him pictures to show what I found. And I share the entire story again in an email just so there's written proof.

I finally hear from my advisor this evening about 6:00 pm CST saying they have it figured out and it should be done tomorrow, but it's currently got the dash removed. Says he'll send me pictures.

This is the current status of my 2014 Grand Cherokee Limited 4x4 as it sits at this moment at the dealership.....

The only two words out of my mouth when I got the picture were probably the same one's you're all thinking....

Holy Shit!

More updates when I get them....

Re: A/C Problem

Good luck. Those pics are scary. I would be nervous about them putting it back together correctly.

I had a new VW GTI that was 3 months old in the shop for 40 days. That is not a typo. I showed up once a week and my car was literally in pieces, engine taken apart and they still couldn't find the issue. Finally, they replaced some internal part that had broken (a tooth from a part had broke off). Needless to say, I fought VW and told them I wasn't taking the car back. After a month or so, they gave me a brand new one. That was 10 years ago and it is still running strong.

Are you sure you really need air conditioning?

Re: A/C Problem

What gets me the most, how can they say it passed a pressure test? There is no way they pressure tested that system, the just filled it and out the door.

After looking at that picture of your stripped interior, I'd feel totally violated if that were my vehicle!

Re: A/C Problem

Yeah......I'm less than pleased about the whole ordeal. I'm fairly certain it'll never be the same again and I'll never be rid of squeaks and rattles. And being only 4 months old I can promise I won't stand for that long. I have a feeling it's all headed downhill from here....

Re: A/C Problem

How did it turn out? I have a 2011 JGC and similar problem. A/C cools for a week or two then nutn. Good air flow coming out just not cold. We've taken it in 3 times already and they say its fine we tested it no leak yada yada yada. They refill it and out the door. I can bet anything we'll be back in a month or so.

Re: A/C Problem

being a former service adviser im sure you are aware that fluid you see has nothing to do with the internal operation of the a/c, as refrigerant boils off at atmospheric pressure.
id be more inclined to think it were coolant but arent you guys running the pink stuff? could be dye but that usually isnt introduced into the system until there is a suspected leak. where does the condensate drip out at? anywhere near the wet places in youre pic?

Unless there is a leak somewhere in the system, the A/C will not lose refrigerant, at least not that much that fast. The picture that shows the puddle under the vehicle....that puddle formed in seconds...long enough for me to walk in my house grab a flash light, and go right back out.

And I knew it wasn't coolant because I smelled and tasted it earlier in the day. And the color was a bit lighter than the green coolant, too. And I believe we do indeed use pink/orange coolant. As far as where it was leaking from, though...couldn't tell you. My service advisor couldn't even tell me what parts they were replacing. And I called Friday to check status and he said it was put back together, but it was throwing codes. So I promptly asked what it was throwing codes for....and he didn't know. Said it would be done Saturday.

Got a call Saturday saying it was throwing codes for a clock spring and they didn't have the part, but they were having it sent overnight and would have it in and everything done by this evening.

Obviously with the way things have gone to this point...I doubt it.

Re: A/C Problem

What a friggin' nightmare! Geez! I hope they can somehow get your Jeep back together correctly and working properly again. Don't think I'd ever go back to a service manager who says "I don't know" so much. Totally unacceptable.

Re: A/C Problem

jeez gives me visions of them using youre jeep as a learner vehicle, i can invision them having all the techs sitting there watching the head tech rip youre dash out, all the while giving pointers and dos and donts, while the younger techs eat doughnuts and tweet the whole time. well lets hope not. good luck
