A/C will not turn off

I've been enjoying my new WK2 for three weeks, haven't noticed a single issue until last week. It was in the 80's and I turned on the AC for the first time. Immediately I noticed a issue as the AC cycled on started blowing cold air then after 20 seconds the air turned warm then 20 seconds later AC cycled back on then off again. Opened the hood and I can audibly hear the compressor cycling on and off.

Called my dealers service department and explained the issue. They want to keep the Jeep for a day to diagnose the AC system. Scheduled an appointment for early this week. Hopefully it's just low on R-134a.

I thought the AC cycling was my only issue. While driving up the mountains this am, the fan was one with the AC off. While driving back the air turned cold, I pulled over and could hear the AC cycling on and off again. The AC turned on without pushing the AC button! Turned off the car hoping it would resolve the issue. Started the car and immediately the AC turned on again.

Does anyone have any idea why the AC would turn on without pushing the AC button? Is it related to the AC compressor cycling on/off?

Re: A/C will not turn off

That doesn't sound abnormal.

The AC compressor normally cycles on-off as it is. If the relative humidity is low the AC compressor will cycle more frequently.

If the engine is under load (climbing a mountain) the AC compressor will be turned off and you'll feel warmer air coming out. When the engine load is reduced the AC compressor will be allowed to engage again and cold air will come out the vents.

Now, you say your AC is coming on without pressing the AC button. Do you have your control set to Auto? Is the indicator light lit on the control? If so, the system will automatically use heat or AC to maintain the temp you have selected.

Re: A/C will not turn off

Thanks for the comments MDBones...

The cycling AC occurs while idling or driving around town. Experienced the issue before mountain driving. The air is ice cold for 20 or so seconds then goes completely warm. This cycle continuous anytime the AC is on regardless of idling, city or highway driving. Personally I find this to be abnormal as the air coming out of the vents isn't constantly cool or cold. What are your thoughts?

I also thought I accidentally selected the Auto mode, looked and everything was off except for the fan setting at 1 with both zones at LO. Turned off the climate control then turned on the fan, right away the AC cycled on without pushing the AC button or selecting Auto mode. I also tried adjusting the dual zone temp up to 64 from LO setting, AC still remains active. It's very odd.

Re: A/C will not turn off

Well, there have been several issues with the 14-15's regarding HVAC operation so there'd be no surprise if you're having one of them based on what you're saying.

Forgive me, but I just wanted to rule out the obvious.

Definitely have your dealer look it over. Until then, take a look over on wk2jeeps.com for the TSB's that cover HVAC. There are a few.

Re: A/C will not turn off

UPDATE:

Dropped Jeep off at dealer yesterday morning. They determined the ambient temperature sensor was sending incorrect readings to the computer. The sensor is reading 58 when it's actually 78 outside. Their going to check the voltage and possibly replace.

They also want to check the refrigerant charge to make sure it's not low. Unfortunately their A/C check system will not work on a 15 GC. They contacted Chrysler and they're sending someone to retrofit the dealer's A/C check system to work on newer GC's.

The service manage said Jeep slightly changed the A/C system on the 15 models. This seems very odd, how would the charging ports be different regardless of the make and model, thought it was all universal?

They had to keep her overnight, missing my GC and so happy I don't own a Chrysler 200 (rental).

Re: A/C will not turn off

SECOND UPDATE:

Dealer was unable to upgrade their a/c system to the new R1234yf freon. They had to take my GC to the Chevrolet dealership across the street.

They found the a/c system was .55kg of the required 1.375kg. The factory under filled the a/c system during production. Dealer was only able to fill to .85kg before they ran out of R1234yf. Going back in for a quick top off on Monday.

Can't believe the system was significantly under filled at the factory, unacceptable for a brand new $45,000 car. Any suggestions on the best way to file a complaint with Chrysler?

To add to the whole mess...I was rear ended in the dealer rental on my way to pick up my Jeep. I'll post pictures tomorrow.

Re: A/C will not turn off

I'm not an AC dude, but I don't see how they can tell that there was 0.55kg of refrigerant in the system.

I'm also surprised that they will fill an undercharged system without doing a leak test.. I thought the EPA required that (tho maybe not for the new eco-friendly refrigerants, don't know).. Unless they punched in the VIN and found a TSB/starcase saying that some units were undercharged at the factory, I don't know how they can tell it isn't leaking.

Just MHO..

Time to find a different dealer for your warranty work.

Re: A/C will not turn off

Great point guys...

The dealer told me they were going to perform a leak test when the system is fully charged. We'll see how things go next week.

I wish I could go to another dealer, unfortunately the only other option is a dealer 85 miles away.
