air spring leaking...oil?

this one has me puzzled...anyone seen something like this? Found a small pool of light oil underneath my rear left side. the other 3 are bone dry.

it smells like some sort of oil or lubricant (smells kinda like RemOil for guns). obviously i'll have to get it in to the dealer soon... worrying because i'm currently 800 miles from home on vacation.

Re: air spring leaking...oil?

Air spring ? What is air spring ? Looks like this is normal shock. If this is oil shock then can leak oil.

air suspension. however, I was wrong: the air spring is the large cylinder behind that.

Well look what I found: http://www.wk2jeeps.com/tsb/tsb_wk2_0200115.pdf

Major weep - fluid covers two-thirds or more of the strut/shock body length (Fig. 3). Strut/Shock replacement is recommended.

+1 - that's definitely a hydraulic shock, not pneumatic.

Re: air spring leaking...oil?

The shock part is hydraulic, it just uses a air bag vs a coil spring to support the vehicle. It needs replacement and I hope its covered under warranty as they are replaced as a unit and not cheap.

definitely, that TSB is pretty recent and its less than a year old. I've got the maxcare 120k warranty either way. thanks for the replies.

The front is the end with the combined air spring/shock assembly that's so expensive. The rear has separate air springs and shocks and the shocks can be replaced without touching the air spring. The rear shocks aren't terribly expensive.
