A few reasons, and I'm sure this is going to piss some people off. I'm trying to be fair here.

1) I've come to realize (I'm sure a lot of you have already found this) that the GC represents probably the best value in this segment, with all the awesome features at a great price. There is nothing out there that compares in the 5-passenger 4WD Crossover/SUV segment.

2) That said, I continue to see lots of issues with the GC's in this forum. Yes, many are being addressed. I have been on a lot of very popular forums for other brands in the last two weeks or so and honestly have not seen the number of issues and lemons that we're seeing here. Yes, I know people generally come to forums to vent, or get advice for problems, I'm taking that into account. I think after having cars that had no issues for so long, it made me complacent. Sure, I can always get a lemon from another manufacturer, but we have at least one person here who has now had two GC's with serious issues (hopefully most recent one is fixed). You can argue this point, and it has been argued to death. You're all entitled to your own opinions, this one is mine.

3) When I *did* have issues with my Jeep, serious serious issues, the response from Jeep/Chrysler (apart from their initial response the first time the Jeep shut off while driving) was a one out of ten. Horrible. The dealer was lax as well until the car was back for the second time and they realized how serious the issue was. Seriously, worst customer service I have ever experienced from a corporation. I'm sure there are worse examples in the world, but to me, this was the worst, and it really pissed me off that I did so much screaming into the wind for almost TWO MONTHS and no one would help me until I got a lawyer. Faxes, emails, calls to Chrysler went unanswered. I have been back and forth over the fence about whether or not I should give my business to this company again. For now, and pushed a little further by @marosenb's experience, my mind is made up. No more Chryslers for me for a while. Certainly no first-year refreshes. I appreciate that Chrysler is trying to do the right thing and is delaying the Cherokee launch. That to me shows a commitment to quality that I hope will continue. It cannot have been an easy decision to make and I'm sure it's costing them money, but awesome for them that they're going to do this right. But for now, for me, no more Chrysler products. At least until the memory of this whole experience is a bit further in the rearview mirror.

Granted, I had a pretty bad experience with my most recent VW, but the TDI Sportwagen has been out for quite a while now in this exact model, so hopefully we have a pretty good chance of getting a good one.

There's probably more to it than this, but those are the big ones.

Lot's of respect AMC, if there is one area I keep seeing a let down it is the dealer network... Maybe that will be next on the priority list.

I wonder if Marchionne has any idea how terrible the US Chrysler/Jeep network is and how poor Chrysler's customer service is? There are so many Jeep dealers in my area, and NONE of them get stellar marks from folks I've talked to on this forum. You'd think ONE of them would stand out in sales and service as being a quality dealership, but none do.

I also hope it's next on his list, but attending to quality as job #1 is the wise choice. If you have solid products, you can then turn to the dealers. If your products are a POS, doesn't matter what the dealer network is like.

But dealers have to be next. Really.

Actually there is ONE dealership that has gotten great reviews from basically everybody who has used it, including me: Koons in Northern VA (Tyson's Corner). But other than that, I have to agree with you.

100%, totally agree. Despite what some people think the quality is way up there when you look at the per capita. Yes likely some room for improvement, but not bad for a refresh.

You would be a different person today though if the dealer was on your side, helped you and got you moved into something else quicker. I do hope that becomes the focus soon as well. I can't tell you how mad it makes me to see nice average Joe walk into a store with a REAL problem that Chrysler has an easy fix for, and Joe get's told some BS line that there is no fix for that without even looking (V6 Transmission update anybody). I know it is their day job, and I know they are never going to be passionate about it but in a well run store, that employee would be gone.

Long term people come back to the store to buy (then run into sales people that don't know Jeeps have Diesels) when they have had a good service experience.....

Moral of the story good people like AMC (and others) buy another brand of vehicle not because they think they are the BEST but because they genuinely believe they will be looked after better. Eventually that will come full circle, the internet will change the pricing schemes and everyone will be on the same playing field, so customer service will be king again some day!

This reminds me... I know a lot of you shop for the best percent below invoice. I am not saying don't go looking for a good deal but I would pay another percent or MAYBE even two to reward a dealership who can look after me in the service department. It is your hard earned money, spend it the way you want but just a thought.

Re: And so it continues...

Do you really need an SUV? How about an Audi Avant? You can lease one for not much more than what you would pay for the Overland GC. AWD, great looking exterior & interior, good gas mileage, and they drive well.

I have heard before that the dealers in the New York area suck. I know someone that was in New York for work for a few months and needed service and the appointments were a few weeks out and they didn't even have express lanes for Oil Changes. I think most large Chrysler dealers have express lanes now, but as of a couple years ago they still wanted an appointment in New York.

Interesting you say that. I talked with a few VW salespeople in the last two weeks. When I told one GM what I wanted to pay, he said "let me give you a little lesson in auto financing." Talked to me like I had never done this before. Tried to tell me why his numbers were so outrageous. I didn't go back, but decided to arm myself, so I got some numbers from a broker and then went to my second dealership.

Met a salesman who I got along well with. Liked the dealership, heard good things about their service department, wanted to do business with them. I showed him the numbers, said I would buy the car immediately (which they had in stock) if he could meet or come close to the numbers. He said the numbers looked legit, talked to his finance mgr and then came back and said, "he says get this deal if you can." I said not even going to try to come close? Now, keep in mind this paper shows the dealer holdback, invoice, everything. The deal proposes that I get all but $100 of the ~$850 holdback. I said so what can you do? Look, I have to pay this guy money to negotiate this deal for me, I'd rather give it to you since you're my local dealer, and I'd love to do the deal locally. I said what if I give you (back) all your holdback? We won't even talk about it. He says let me go beat up the finance guy a bit more. Came back and said "these numbers look OK to me, but he's not giving me concrete numbers, just saying we can't get there." So I'm like "so give me some hard numbers? I'm not saying I need THIS DEAL, I'd rather buy from you -- you have the car, it's a 2013, you don't sell a lot of the TDI wagons by your own admission, let's do a deal!"

In the end, his manager couldn't get close to the number. Gave lots of excuses why he couldn't. The manager said my numbers were wrong, or were based on last month's incentives. The only incentive there was a $250 cash to dealer which was supposedly good only in July. So I said hell, let's take that off the table. I'll give you your $250 back into the deal plus your holdback.

Still no deal.

Look. I want to do business locally. I know the dealers have to keep the lights on and pay their staff. I don't need the best price, but I'm sorry, you're not making $2K off the car from me. Even I have limits.

Shame too, because I really liked the sales guy.

So tomorrow I call my broker and see if he really can make good on these numbers.

We looked at the Allroad and Q5 and liked both of them, but I think in the end, my wife and I are looking the lease-to-eventually-own route, and it makes a lot more sense with a TDI than with an Audi (whose maintenance bills can get very pricey, never mind the repair bills). But yes, they are gorgeous vehicles.
