Didn't see your bit about the MDX's, but even at a pretty decent discount, they're probably above my price range. Also, the mileage is pretty bad and (ugh) premium fuel.

Still looking for alternatives, probably cheaper ones. But I did contact a broker about the GC as it seems like Browns is not returning my emails anymore. Fourth time trying to get them to sell me a car and they don't want to. Heh. Maybe it's a sign.

Maybe this is your chance to make car buying fun again.... start checking out different vehicles, realize you are in control and not at the mercy of any one dealer...

Dunno. I still haven't checked one out. Will probably go during lunch today.

Really, I can't go through what I've gone through again, and I know the odds are long.. I really feel for @marosenb. I just can't imagine it.
PM me before you settle on Terrain. Owned a 2010 (wife).... Not saying it is a bad vehicle because it isn't but maybe worth a discussion...

Re: And so it continues...

When my 2012 Overland was in the shop for a rear end collision repair, I got a rental: a 2013 loaded Terrain with very very low miles on it, I consider it a P.O.S. (piece of s***). Doesn't compare at all with a Grand Cherokee. Hated the way that Terrain drives and feels on the road.

FWIW, we now have your OPINION. The OP should drive every vehicle he's interested in to acquaint himself with each of them. Some people love Chevy's and hate Fords. Others, just the opposite. Some people hate Porsches and love Corvettes. Others, just the opposite. What you find terrible, the OP might find wonderful.

I agree you should buy whatever you will be happy with. I have driven a terrain and its not a bad vehicle, its just not in the same league as a GC. It would be more along the lines of a patroit. The engine on the terrain sounded like a diesel to me. Its a really different sound.

Concerns I have with the Terrain ( I have a 2013 equinox company vehicle) are mainly wind noise on the highway is terrible for the price and I am still seeing a lot of timing chains getting done in the 2.4s and 3.6s. Most are getting done under warranty but there are no exceptions when you roll past 100k so make sure you are aware.

They did a mid 2013 change in the radio hardware in the Equinox/Terrain and there are some Bluetooth phone book issues (if I sync my phone book, the phone stops working). There are also some random disconnects of USB audio with newer generation iPods) to date I have been told that GM spends more money on Bluetooth technology than anybody and that my problem is with my phone and or my iPod. Interesting how both worked in the other 2013 equinox I had earlier in the year!

Anyway, the timing chains are warranty, if you are not keeping the truck for 180k then it likely is not a big deal. The radio, you may want to test out with your stuff before buys though if it mattered to you.

Yeah, we looked again this weekend. Everything else is either too big or too small, too cheap feeling or too expensive. Ugh. Trying to start thinking outside the box... Nothing coming up. Test drove the Terrain and liked it, didn't love it. But it seems to be a good vehicle and we are considering it. Seems to have a good track record with reliability.

My wife just bought a new Ford Escape. Very nice but on the smaller side like the Terrain. As far as size i'd compare it to the Honda CRV. Perfect for her though. We got the 1.6 turbo and let me tell you, it's very fun to drive. She loves it. The fit and finish is excellent. Might want to check it out.

I think we probably owe it to ourselves to check out the Escape. My first impression was that it was too small, but we should definitely check.

Had a chat with the wife and we are probably going with the Terrain. Yes, it's not in the same league as the GC, but with everything we went through, right now, we just can't take the chance on another. If we had a good dealer near us that might be something, but really, in a 30 mile radius, they all pretty much suck from what we've heard. And I think our local dealer pulling an attitude with me on the pricing just really sealed it, at least for now, if @marosenb's second bad Jeep didn't.

We won't love the Terrain like we did our Jeep (when it worked), but we are far less likely to have glitches that lots here are experiencing, and we are less likely to get another lemon.

So yes, I know it's not a Grand Cherokee, it's not in the same league, and some might consider it a POS (and I did say I'd never get another GM after they killed Saab), but for various reasons, I think we're going to get one and be a bit less ecstatic driving it, but right now, emotionally, I think it will be a better fit for us. It's mostly my wife's daily driver, and she says she can be OK with it.

It's just where we are... Going to cross-post this in my own thread as a sort of coda to the whole thing...

Best of luck, @marosenb -- I really hope this all gets straightened out for you.

I think people should respect that, it is a solid platform that I am fully versed in. Good luck regardless of your end decision.

Sometimes the safe fall back works for the mid term!

Thanks amc. Good luck to you, too. Keep us posted on how it's going, and when you finally do get a new vehicle. Even if it's not a jeep, you should still post about it here, to let us know.

I am hoping my latest jeep just had the one water related issue and is all set, though the fact that every time I call the service department, they delay me another day before I get it back has me a little concerned. Still in my Dodge Journey loaner. lol.

I will say this: Never buy a car that was formerly a rental. You never know, it could have been driven by someone like me. If you slam on the gas, the journey can actually move pretty well

Seriously. I never understood how Enterprise could make a big deal about what a great sale a rental car is. One of the guys there said, "yeah, they get regular maintenance, unlike some schmoe off the street that you're buying from." OK, point, but how many times have you had a loaner/rental with 1% life left on the oil monitor, or that (!) telling you one wheel is about 5psi under what it should be? For me, that would be quite often.

Just actually took a look at Edmunds to compare the size of the Escape with the Terrain. I thought the Terrain was bigger. Not so. So thanks, @vnbWK2 -- looks like we have one more vehicle to test drive.

Your dealer is probably communicating with Chrysler and making sure everything is ship-shape before giving the GC back to you now, given the history. So visualize it just being 100% when you get it back, and hopefully it will be!

Cheers!
