And yet another JEEP recall announced today

DETROIT (AP) Chrysler is recalling nearly 189,000 Jeep Grand Cherokees and Dodge Durangos in the U.S. to fix a fuel pump problem that can cause the SUVs to stall.
The recall covers some 2011 models with 3.6-liter V6 or 5.7-liter V8 engines. Chrysler says a relay can fail, increasing the risk of a crash.
Chrysler traced the problem to a spring that can deform because of heat.
The vehicles also might not start, and the fuel pump could keep working even when the engine is shut off. The company says that as of Aug. 25 its not aware of any crashes or injuries from the problem.
Dealers will replace the fuel pump relay for free starting Oct. 24.

Some more detail:
"Chrysler Group LLC is recalling 230,760 SUVs worldwide because a fuel pump problem can lead to stalling"
"The recall covers an estimated 188,723 vehicles in the U.S.; 15,898 in Canada; 7,126 in Mexico and 19,013 outside North America."

Chrysler Recalls Nearly 189,000 Jeep Grand Cherokees, Dodge Durangos « CBS Detroit

"Chrysler is recalling almost 189,000 Jeep Grand Cherokees and Dodge Durangos in the U.S. to fix a fuel pump problem that can cause the SUVs to stall.
But a safety advocate says the recall doesn’t cover enough models, contending the same problem can happen in millions of other Chrysler, Jeep and Ram vehicles.
The recall, posted Saturday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, covers some 2011 models with 3.6-liter V6 or 5.7-liter V8 engines. Chrysler says a relay can fail, increasing the risk of a crash, although the company said that as of Aug. 25, it wasn’t aware of any crashes or injuries.

The company began looking into the problem in October of 2013 and traced it to a spring that can become deformed because of heat.
The vehicles also might not start, and the fuel pump could keep working even when the engine is shut off. The company says that as of Aug. 25 it’s not aware of any crashes or injuries from the problem.
The recall covers SUVs built from Jan. 25, 2010 through July 20, 2011, according to the NHTSA documents.

Dealers will replace the fuel pump relay for free starting Oct. 24.

The Center for Auto Safety, a nonprofit advocacy group founded by Ralph Nader, says the recall is inadequate because more than 5 million other Chrysler vehicles have the same fuel pump power control module as the Grand Cherokee and Durango.
“Chrysler should recall them all,” Clarence Ditlow, the center’s executive director, said Saturday.

Ditlow’s group filed a petition last month asking NHTSA to investigate power system failures in Chrysler vehicles that could cause them to stall while being driven.
In the petition, the group contended that an electrical power control module used by Chrysler in millions of vehicles since 2007 can go haywire, causing them to stall in traffic and cut off devices powered by electricity. The allegation covered Ram pickup trucks, Chrysler and Dodge minivans, the Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Durango and Dodge Journey SUVs, the Jeep Wrangler, and other models.

The safety group says it has received over 70 complaints and that the government has received hundreds.

NHTSA has yet to make a decision on whether to investigate the matter. Chrysler said it is investigating consumer complaints and retrieving components from vehicles in the field for a closer analysis. The company says its vehicles meet all federal safety standards.
The center’s petition said that Chrysler’s “Totally Integrated Power Module,” which includes a computer, relays and fuses, distributes electrical power through the entire vehicle. In addition to stalling, the faulty modules have may have caused air bags not to inflate and fuel pumps to keep running, causing unintended acceleration and fires, the petition said.

Ditlow said the company started phasing them out in 2012, but they remain in the 2014 Jeep Wrangler and the Dodge and Chrysler minivans.
NHTSA also is looking into a New Jersey man’s petition filed earlier this month alleging that Chrysler minivans can stall unexpectedly after refueling.

Car owners and advocacy groups can petition the NHTSA asking for investigations that sometimes lead to recalls. The Center for Auto Safety has successfully petitioned NHTSA in the past, including one instance that led to the recent recall of 1.56 million older Jeep SUVs with fuel tanks mounted behind the rear axles. The center contended the tanks can leak fuel and cause fires in a crash, while Chrysler maintains the tanks perform as well as comparable models from other automakers."

Re: And yet another JEEP recall announced today

Yay. Wish they could just "package" these things up and fix a bunch at once, instead of going once a month.

Last month...brake booster
This month...sun visor wiring
Next month...fuel relay
Next month...???

Re: And yet another JEEP recall announced today

I don't mind as long as it gets acknowledged and fixed. I do mind when I have to pay outside of the warranty period for things that never ever seem to break on Japanese vehicles.

I went to the dealer to get my other recall work done and they said I had to make an appointment. Well, that was 3 months ago and they still haven't given me an appointment because they said they didn't have the part and Chrysler is dragging their feet giving them out. Well, okay, when my brakes freeze and I crash I know who to blame.

As for this new recall, maybe that'll take another 6 months to get my car done.

Like all businesses today, they are probably under-resourced. Idle staff means waste of money

The one person in this department is processing them one at a time. Although it is good that they are resolving these issues

This recall has nothing to do with brakes freezing. If all the planets align, it will cause your brakes to act as manual, instead of power brakes. So, if it happens to you, press down harder on the brake pedal.

I'm gonna wait a year or two and have all the ones that pertain to my vehicle
done at once. May take them a few days though.

I don't think this recall effects your 2012.

Re: And yet another JEEP recall announced today

I am very familiar with this particular recall. The issue starts as a longer than normal crank, or every now and again an engine stall after refueling. The cranks get longer and longer, until one day it won't start until repeated attempts. Once or twice the vehicle shut off on us while we were driving, which I considered a SERIOUS safety issue. Others had the relay fail the other way, where it stuck on and bled the battery overnight.

We dealt with it last summer while the TIPM was on a National backorder. It took us nearly 90 days to get ours replaced. Now it appears they have found a bandage repair to do that's cheaper than replacing the TIPM with a redesigned unit. While I understand it should address the problem, it's definitely the low cost/easy out solution for Chrysler.

I spoke with Chrysler Care at length about this issue, and finally ran across an operator that was more than familiar with the issue. I knew from the forums that it was a big issue and one that they needed to address. A class-action lawsuit was getting started around the time I was waiting for my repair (but I did not sign up for it).

In the end Chrysler did the right thing for me and gave me the TIPM but made me pay for the labor to troubleshoot and replace it. Now I suspect I will get reimbursed for that cost as well as part of this recall. I also suspect we will still have to get this recall work done on this new TIPM, as I do not believe they ever addressed the root problem and redesigned the TIPMs. Mine had a new part number, but I was told that was because it was build by a different supplier. I am anxiously waiting for October 24th to find out.
