Bought my 2015 Grand Cherokee Altitude 2 months ago and seem to keep having HVAC issues. When I start the vehicle, the HVAC unit makes a cracking sound, which IMO you shouldn't hear in a brand new 2015 vehicle. The other issue is the A/C compressor sounds like it cycles on and off every 5 seconds which causes the "Darth Vader" hiss inside the cabin. Maybe related... the A/C was never that cold to begin with.
But something else I just noticed... when I have the air selected for Front Defrost and Feet, air is also blowing out of the driver side vent.
I already brought the Jeep to the dealer to check into the A/C compressor / hissing sound and the tech said "Normal operation".
I've owned many cars, and I KNOW no brand new vehicle should have these types of issues.
Can anyone suggest DIY fixes... or is another trip to the stealership in order?
LOL... I don't care what year you're talking about, Jeep will never be remembered for its stellar HVAC performance on either the heating or cooling side.
Every vehicle I've ever owned (including non-Jeep) has had one performance quirk or operating peculiarity covering everything you mention above and more.
That cracking sound you hear is most likely the blend doors opening/closing to match what you have the HVAC set to do.
It's not unusual for the compressor to cycle on/off like that under certain conditions. My Accord does that... and what is most irritating about it is that it also kicks the overly loud electric cooling fan on/off at the same time.
Anytime you have a defrost setting on you're going to get a little air out of the driver/passenger side vents... even though there are dedicated side window vents in the pillars.
Other than the compressor cycling, my 8 year old Accord's HVAC system still cranks out cold air and heat when and where you want it... and it does it better than any Jeep I've ever owned.
I don't know if there are any DIY fixes for your complaints. And having the dealer mess with it may create more problems than will be solved.
it may be your blend door actuator going...jeeps are terrible with that, I had 3 actuators fail in one month, 1 for the blend door under driver side dash, and both driver side doors lock actuators, all out of warranty
