Just received an email this morning from the US DOT NHTSA for a recall of Jeeps WK2 2011-2014 relating to a Vanity Mirror Lamp short which may result in a fire. Number14V391.

Got that email too. Direct link is
http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners...getCategory=R&searchCriteria.nhtsa_ids=14V391

"Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2011-2014 Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured January 5, 2010, through December 11, 2013. In the affected vehicles, the wiring for the vanity lamp in the sun visor may short circuit, after a service repair is performed."

"Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will inspect and repair any damaged wiring, and install a new sun visor that properly routes the wire, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in August 2014."

NHTSA reports three vehicles, all of whom had prior work done.
There obviously may be more than NHTSA is aware of.

Unless there is some danger for untouched vehicles, this has to be one of the stupider recalls I've seen since the days of Clarence Ditlow and Ralph Nader---it would be much easier to target this to any vehicle going IN for repair and leave the rest alone.

These are the first vehicles I have ever owned that a second recall came out before I could get far enough up the list to get the first one fixed. And I've got 2 or them and my dealer is 40 miles away. I'm accumulating a lot of miles for recalls and TSBs.

Napleton River Oaks in Lansing, IL is tops. Got the power brake booster recall completed within two weeks of notice. Service guys and gals are tops also. Plus free coffee and popcorn.

Here is the latest on the visor recall as of July 11, 2014. Hopefully resolved for 2015 JGC.

Washington — Chrysler Group LLC said Friday (July 11, 2014) it is recalling 895,000 SUVs for fire concerns and will reroute wiring for vanity-mirror lights after government regulators upgraded an investigation into the issue.

The recall campaign covers some 2011-2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango SUVs. Chrysler is aware of three related injuries. It told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration it was aware of 62 reports of fire incidents.

Hopefully we can avoid having this done for a long time.

From the TSB/Recall;

"Each dealer to whom vehicles in the recall were assigned will receive enough Sun Visor Wire Guide Packages to service about 20% of those vehicles."

The dealer I use is pretty good. But this involves too much trim removal to expect it to come back without any misalignments and rattles.

Between the booster and this, I may have to start doing my own oil changes again, just to avoid the dealership. ;)

Exactly my concern also Bill, its probably unlikely to get out of it without additional rattles or things being hastily reassembled and it showing. Also it doesn't sound as though there is any threat of fire at all unless someone messes with things up there anyway. agree will be putting this one off although at the rate this vehicle is back in for things it will be hard as we will be hounded about it every time we bring the thing in.

Why am I having visions of stripped screws, buckled headliners, rattling overhead consoles, and leaking door seals? I've got two of these things to get this AND the brake booster recall. What are the odds of getting both of them done with no screw ups? I love the vehicles but between recalls and TSBs it's like joining the Fight of the Month Club. And my dealer is 40 miles away.

I still can't figure out how this recall works. Are all 2011-2014 WK2's going to be recalled, stripped out their internals and inspected? Or is only a small group of them (presumably 181K) are going to go through this mess?

I had my brake booster fix done in less than 1 hr. The SM I talked to has seen two FAIL prior to recall in my RUST-BELT town. I'm glad I had that fixed. The water from salt spray will pool and rust through quickly, apparently..

As for this mirror thing, I don't want that. I never use it. Haven't had the recall yet.

What I would prefer to do is disconnect the wire, even put in a quick connect somewhere below the headliner so it could be reconnected some day easily.

Anyone have any idea where one would simply "cut" the wires to just remove any risk of fire, even if no headliner work has or will be done?

Got mine today too. Do I let them rip apart my interior or wait til they access the areas that cause the hazard....nope they ain't touching my interior until necessary!

I got mine last Friday. I am a newby still and posted a thread about "how many recalls are too many." It says 1.6 hours but some vehicles will take longer. I did have the brake booster done and mine had a crack in it so the whole brake booster was replaced with sheik aded. I live in a Lake Snow belt below Lake Ontario. When I got my Jeep back no lose screws or rattling so far but greasy hand prints all over the paint on the drivers door. This doesn't inspire much confidence as the tech looked to be about 16 years old. I don't use the vanity mirrors, but I bought this used and its obviously the lady realtor used it a lot as her mascara tipped fingers made a few marks. I really don't want them monkeying around with the whole roof panels. I have a dash cam that I fed the wiring around the windshield and obviously that job will have to be redone after they make any fix.

With my service contract, I have had the HVAC blower replaced, a cooling system motor and a wheel sensor. As the vehicle ages its expected to have some thing needing repair, but this seems excessive. This is my 20th vehicle at age 46, and the only vehicle that needed more servicing was a 1978 Volkswagen Dasher, a giant mistake, but a first car. A 1992 Ford Taurus was at about the same level with trips to the dealer. I do most of the main maintenance stuff myself with my FIL assistance. Just changed fluids in transfer case and differentials. Its still a very nice Jeep, and I still owe a few more years. Its very frustrating as the dealers around here a fairly terrible to work with.

Got my notice in the mail yesterday. Wife literally yelled out "WTF another one!?" I refuse to take this to my local dealer especially after the disaster they caused with the last recall and warranty work, so time to seek out another shop. Doubt I want to go and get this done though since I can easily see the dealer rushing the job to meet the time permitted for this recall and damaging the vehicle.

If you have problems with your dealership take it to a different one. I've had no problems with my dealership at all. Noticed scratches on instrument panel when first bought replaced no problem, bowed lift gate handle replaced no problem, 1st recall allong with replacement of radio no problem, 2nd recall no problem. Every time I have been up there which it was just those few times they have looked up available tsb's and have applied them.
