Anti freeze smell

Lately I'm getting a strong anti freeze smell from under the hood after driving it, no leaks, fluid level OK.
Any ideas?

Re: Anti freeze smell

If you live somewhere that they use a deicer fluid on the roads it could be that. They sprayed it all over wet roads here in oregon. It sprays up on the exhaust and smells as it evaporates off.

Re: Anti freeze smell

5.7 Hemi has a known issue that reveals iself early in ownership. Check the ground where you park and around the water pump for orangish or whitish residue that ran down and dried. The water pump has to be replaced on a lot of these. Including mine, and it blew antifreeze all up under the hood one day and I had to get it towed. Just had my Jeep towed again for brake booster failure.

Re: Anti freeze smell

I,ve been noticing the same thing on my 3.6 the last few trips. The smell is perry strong, so much so I fear coolant loss. I have about 15,000 miles.

Is anyone actually losing coolant?

I get the smell very intermittently on a 5.7, but in 25K miles, the coolant level has dropped less than the width of the magic marker line I put on the overflow bottle.
Dealer has visually inspected pressure tested the system on each oil change gratis, and found nada.

I can't think of any repeatable driving conditions or style where the next morning I will smell coolant for a few seconds, then it goes away... beginning to chalk it up as one of Jeep's Little Life Mysteries.

Re: Anti freeze smell

I crawled under it last night, you can see it coming from the water pump area. It looks like it has been weeping but drying on the engine so no leak on the ground.
Monday its off to the dealer to get it replaced.

Where is the water pump on the hemi's?
How far underneath do you have to crawl?
Is there enough stain/dye in the extended coolant to show up if there is a bit of weeping?

Re: Anti freeze smell

You can see it from under the jeep through the opening in the splash shield. You will see dried up coolant if it's been leaking.

Re: Anti freeze smell

Water pump replaced, brake booster recall done, the visor recall and all the latest updates. Lawless Jeep in Woburn did it, same place I bought it.
So far so good.
