Any way to use the backup camera when not in "R"??

Sonetimes it would be nice (like parking) to be able to turn on the backup camera while in drive just to check the distance to the car or other object behind you (without putting the GC in "R").

Can it be done??

Re: Any way to use the backup camera when not in "R"??

You can use the Lockpic which can be found here:
http://www.coastaletech.com/MYGIG.htm

There is also the NV_MYGIGUNLOCK
http://www.navvideo.com/navvideo-mod...ygigunlock.asp

And the TVandNav2Go which is what I purchased but have not received or installed yet.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0022H3RXG
This unit comes with the A/V add in cables for $219 where the Lockpic you need to add another 69$ to the $269 unit cost.

You can find the Lockpic on EBay got under $200.

Hope all of this helps confuse you... there are loads of different options but all basicly do the same thing.

There is another good thread about this at http://jeepgarage.org/showthread.php...ght=nav+unlock

Re: Any way to use the backup camera when not in "R"??

After you install the Lockpic or whatever brand, and are able to push the buttons to get the rear camera to turn on while moving forward, will the camera still turn on automatically when you put the car in reverse? And also how about the Adaptive cruise, backup alarm, and blind spot warning - will these still function normally after install? Sounds like a great add on if it doesn't mess up any of the normal electronic functions...(I'm getting an Overland with the 430N and ACC, etc.). Thanks...

Re: Any way to use the backup camera when not in "R"??

Is the factory reverse camera constantly powered in all gears or is it necessary to run that power wire from the lockpick and cut the factory power wire?

I installed LockPick on my 2011 Overland with the 430N and it works well.

The Lockpick allows you to input Nav info while moving, use the backup camera anytime you want and watch a DVD while in motion.

The backup camera works as normal when you put it in reverse and there is no change to the way blind spot or FCW works as they have nothing to do with the radio.

Re: Any way to use the backup camera when not in "R"??

Thanks IndyBob, guess I got to have one...

One other question - for an Overland w/430N what does the CHR550 model Lockpick add (http://www.coastaletech.com/CHR550.htm) vs. the Mygig Lockpick V3? Or is the V3 actually a newer unit? I just really want the Nav while in motion and backup camera features. Too many colors on their web page for my bleary eyes to figure out...thanks...

Hey Indy....can you put the backup camera on in any gear? If so did it just work or did you have to run a power wire to the camera? Thanks!!

You can turn it on in any gear and I did not need to run a power wire.

Re: Any way to use the backup camera when not in "R"??

Cool thank you. Since the online version of the instructions is for previous models, it said the camera is powered by the reverse lights which would obviously only come on in reverse. And a new constant power wire was needed for other gears. Glad to hear thats not the case.

Yes, the 2011 does not need the power wire. One other thing you will notice is that the speed display in NAV will always show zero. This is not a problem it's just they way it is.

Do I have to uninstall this when I get my car serviced?
