Re: Anyone else think the hemi is underpowered?

Does Chrysler offer a modern V8 in any of its vehicles that can compete with Ford's Coyote or Chevy's current small blcok. GM will be introducing a new variant of the small block soon so Chrysler will be even further behind.

Who cares hat GM has in its mid size V8s? And it really needs to stop calling it a hemi? How's about an aluminum block?

And in the real world more speeds may make it faster and it might not. Until the 8spd is out you dont know punk. So shut your pie hole. Smoother maybe and maybe not. You dont know.

With 0-60 times it depends on gearing and shift points. how many times will the tranny shift before it hits 60mph? We dont know and just because another vehicle is quicker with a similar engine and tranny doesnt mean the GC will be.
Chrysler is producing the 8spd for fuel economy and not for performance.

They will be producing the 8 speed for both fuel economy and performance and yes it will be quicker. I will also say again that GM and Ford do not even offer a V-8 in a vehicle that's in the same class as the grand cherokee. To your other point they call it a Hemi because it is. Another thing GM and Ford do not have a transmission that's even compares to that 8 speed. I really have to ask why did you even buy a grand cherokee? Seems like you would have perferred someting else.

Ford's new 5.0 "Coyote": 84 HP/ liter.
Chrysler 5.7 "Hemi": 63 HP/ liter.

Ok so what are they going to put it in and is it the same class of vehicle?

Re: Anyone else think the hemi is underpowered?

Sorry hoss the current hemi isnt a real hemi. Check the shape of the combustion chambers. chrysler is trading on its rep of the old 426 hemi.

No one remembers the hemis in De Sotos or the real 300s

Those issues are irrelevant. The fact is that the Coyote motor is more advanced than the relatively antiquated Hemi and it is time for Chrysler to play catch-up like they did with the Pentastar that makes 81 HP/ liter.

Both Ford and GM moved out of the V8 game in their cars due to the tech in the V6 making a V8 useless.

As for the 8 speed, LOL

More gears does make a car faster and more gas friendly. Seen that in Fords, and now we are seeing this in Chryslers.

Ford doesn't have an 8 speed.

Re: Anyone else think the hemi is underpowered?

Ford was the 1st automaker (out of the big 3) to go from the basic 4 speed to 6 speed with improved gas mileage and speed.

I was brought home from birth in a Desoto. The 1957 Adventurer offered a 345 c.u. Hemi with 345 horsepower. Same cubic inches as modern day 5.7 Hemi. I remember.
As far as transmissions, Power-Glide's are popular among some racers and they have two speeds. Nobody I know of uses eight speed transmissions for drag racing.

I don't know if they were first. I know GM and Ford jointly developed a 6 speed front wheel drive transmission that they both used and still use. I know Ford has an 8 speed coming but I don't believe its out yet.

Engines for rated differently (gross hp) in those days. Actual hp was probably about 300.
