Re: Anyone else think the hemi is underpowered?

Most of the hemi problems with the JGC is gearing. My work truck is a hemi Dodge truck with 4 doors and the long bed and it will run circles around the JGC with the same engine. The JGC is geared for fuel economy (diffs and transmission) while my work truck is geared for serious towing and hauling but at the same time I only get about 12 mpg's out of it.

Re: Anyone else think the hemi is underpowered?

Thanks for all of the replies... It definitely does seem like a torque management, drive-by-wire, transmission responsiveness issue.. A new tune would def help...

Re: Anyone else think the hemi is underpowered?

You can do all the computer tune ups, air filters, exhaust that you want but it will never compensate for the high gear ratio. You could change the gears (both front and rear diff if you have a 4x4) to something more usable like in the 3.70 range or lower to give it that get up and go but the price would probably be outragous.

As for the 8 speed, LOL

More gears does make a car faster and more gas friendly. Seen that in Fords, and now we are seeing this in Chryslers.
GM has nothing but V8s in their larger vehicles. The Lambdas have the terrible V6, and desperately need a V8.

Re: Anyone else think the hemi is underpowered?

diablo sport makes some awesome tuners, but they haven't gotten one for these new jeeps. something about a rolling code in the ECU that makes it impossible, as of now, for them to reprogram. i added a K&N intake and magnaflow exhaust and it is noticeably quicker. i'd guess it added about 20-25hp. k&n claims 17hp and i'd assume magnaflow adds at least a few. that combo is great, its quite at normal driving and cruising speeds, but sounds throaty and sexy as hell when you stop the gas through the floor . i'd classify this car as fast considering its a 4X4 with shit tons of options that is fast in sport mode and great off road.. think of the engineering feat that jeep/chrysler "accomplished" with this vehicle.. plus the exhaust tips make the back so much sexier

Re: Anyone else think the hemi is underpowered?

tnjeep is right. Gearing absolutely sucks. Too tall of 1st gear, gears are spaced where it doesn't keep the Jeep within it's optimal powerband. Can be slow to kick down randomly, even in sport mode. I'm sure Jeep does pull back the torque in 1st when you stomp on it from a dead stop. I know Nissan does that with their Titan.

I love my Jeep but the MDX kicked down quick and seemed to go right to the upper RPMs with flooring it. Jeep left a lot on the table with the current ECM and transmission. 8 speed should be a huge improvement if they go for it. I have read even the 8 speed has too tall of gears up top as well but the lower gears are still spaced closer than the 6 speed.

Re: Anyone else think the hemi is underpowered?

I can't agree more. My jeep gears are too high, doesn't drop down quick enough or at all when turning.
I run 89 octane to give it a boost now and then. It seems to satisfy me before I dump $1000 into kn air and pipes. I don't think it needs HP. I think it's needs the tranny fixed. Is there a programmer out there for 2012s?

How about tires? Any good replacement suggestions?

Re: Anyone else think the hemi is underpowered?

ok not to add fuel to the fire, ive been reading this thread for awhile, my 4.7 baby v8 feels just as strong as a hemi off the line but will lose when the hp of the hemi takes over, mine is quicker because the hemi uses drive by wire where the 4.7 is cable driven, If you know how to use the drive by wire it will help you, not hinder you, when I bought my commander with 22,000 on it I test drove a 2007 commander with the hemi and I was impressed with the power but there was an annoying tick and it shifted wierder than the 4.7 did (they have the same tranny 545 rfe) I bought the 4.7 and couldnt be happier, my tranny went out at 83,000 because some peron put antifreeze in it, I took this oppurtunity to revise the stock tranny with some new gears, better tourque converter and new tuning done by the tranny shop and all I can say is WOW its a different jeep, nice tight not too firm shifts, I love it.

I'm curious...what's so terrible about the lambda V6?
