Re: Anyone else think the hemi is underpowered?

Honestly, yes it is underpowered mainly because of severe detuning and green gearing. My previous 4.7HO although having less HP/torque than the 5.7 felt tons more fun. Then again, GVW was alot less on my WJ vs our new WK2's.

In a nutshell, the Hemi is a good engine and somewhat efficient for what it is. Contrary to belief, it is NOT a speed demon. It also plays quite well with our WK2 platform, but in my personal opinion, it's nothing to rant and rave about. The 6.4 on the other hand is a completely different animal. The few that I have driven have impressed me to say the least.

Yes, as most of you know, my current WK2 is a V6. The Pentastar can't have sand kick at it either. For what it is, it does exactly what it was designed to do. For my daily commutes and moderate towing, I can't frown one bit at it.

I used to be all about speed, but after so many birthdays, that tends to fade away. Being a middle age guy, obviously I still like to play once in a while. For those of you that still love to go fast, that's all on you. It all boils down to what YOU want. Personally I could care less if the guy beside me drives a Yugo or a Lambo. This is still a free country (sort of) so there is no reason any of us cannot purchase and enjoy whatever we want.

Re: Anyone else think the hemi is underpowered?

My 5.7L Hemi suits me just fine....brillant off-road and can really perform - ANYWHERE.

A few simple tickles and this motor will willingly give you 400+ hp. What more do you want from a serious 4WD.
The new Diesels are big torque & pretty trick but nobody likes the way they sound and are gutless at the top-end. - 0 - 60mph......who does 60 mph ??
after 60mph the diesels fade in your rear view mirror.

Somthing wrong with your Hemi boy.

I love my JGC but I do not consider it to be a "serious 4wd". A serious 4wd would be the wrangler or anything that sits up higher, has a frame body (unibody in the JGC's), and good lockers in the front and rear diff as well as a real bumpers and much lower gear ratios.

A fair number of WK/WH GCL's are lifted/barred/winched and run A/T's or muddies here in Australia. Believe me, they are really competent off-roaders. Just check-out the Ausjeepoffroad forum.

Me, I live in Western Australia where 150 foot road trains are commonplace and passing these behemoths at 70mph requires top-end horsepower unavailable in a diesel (run out of puff). Need the 4WD on the fly because easy to get squeezed off the road into the scrub/desert at speed.
My WH GCL Hemi is a perfect vehicle for Aussie conditions with a bit of luxury thrown in ??

I'm not saying the JGC can't handle most what is thrown at it. My chevy truck with front and back winch can also tackle most of the same things but I don't consider it a real hardcore 4wd either.

Sorry mate,
I forgot to mention that my JGCL Hemi is running the Quadradrive II (auto locking ELSD on all four wheels) and NV245 transfer case....not the Dana's used on the Wranglers/SRT8's which would require lockers ?
These options were the most preferred for the top of the range WK/WH Hemi in Australia. Excellent Low 4WD range and really capable rock crawlers..just need to fit a small lift and a couple of bash plates. Would leave most Wranglers sitting in the bog....LOL

Re: Anyone else think the hemi is underpowered?

The Aussie version may be different but I don't think the US version QD2 has a locker/limited slip on the front axle, just the elctronic braking on the slipping wheel.
