Auto-stick - no upshift control?

Newbie owner of 2012 Overland 3 days ago.

I was expecting full control of gear selection regardless of throttle once in manual mode.
Wife's G35 is like this. And I thought the 2015 I test-drove was this way.
If you mash the throttle at 40 MPH 2700 RPM 3rd gear, it kicks down to 1st gear. It does not stay in 3rd. Up shift all you want as the vehicle accelerates, the . tranny is not changing gear until it hits redline (I presume...I lfted off the pedal at 5500 RPM).
The manual only references auto-stick in the SRT section. Odd. It says it will shift up or down when +/- selected by driver. That might is true under very light acceleration. Anything more and I am overridden. Scary thing is, I had it in Sport mode and the owners manual says in that mode auto-stick will not up shift. It will hold gear even if max engine speed is reached. So who knows...pistons might have come thru the hood before it shifted.

So the question: Is is malfunctioning? Or does the quarky override remove control under throttle?

Thanks folks.

If I'm understanding correctly, it sounds like you may be expecting full manual shifting, this is not the case. All you're doing is limiting the highest gear it can shift into. If you're mashing the throttle, it assumes you need max TQ & HP, so it runs to redline.
