Bad odor with heavy acceleration

To begin I have noticed this twice now. I drive my Jeep relatively low key but I road rage or just needlessly think I am in a rush some times and go peddle to the metal. I have had my jeep about a year now and I've only gotten to this point twice now, but anyway so in both instances of going pedal 2 the metal from a relative normal speed after I decelerate back to a normal speed a lingering bad odor is present in the car. It is almost like gasoline or just a machine smell.

Has anyone experienced anything like this?

Sounds like a possible exhaust leak

Re: Bad odor with heavy acceleration

I am actually refinancing the loan and since the warranty is ending I am getting one offered by my credit union. It'll probably take some time before it goes into affect so wanted to see if this was something that needs to be immediately addressed.

It really is only ever present if I push it extremely hard, which like I said I have done basically twice.

Re: Bad odor with heavy acceleration

My 2014 Hemi has the exact same problem. On mine, it only occurs when I accelerate above about 3000 or 3500 RPM. As long as I stay below that RPM, no smell. As soon as I go above, I get the smell.

It doesn't matter if I have the AC on, off, or even on recirculate.

I'm taking mine in next week to have the Brake Booster recall done (and several other TSB's), so I'm going to have them check this out too.

I really do think it's an exhaust leak. It must be really minor, so when you aren't revving the engine high, the exhaust doesn't leak. But as soon as you rev above 3000 RPM, the exhaust leaks under the hood somewhere and gets sucked in through the air/ventilation system.

I've read on several other forums that the Hemi is notorious for cracking bolts where the exhaust manifold attaches to the engine.

Re: Bad odor with heavy acceleration

You must be referring to the a strong sulfur or rotten egg smell.

It's a common occurrence on todays fuel that use more hydrogen sulfide than before.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong here, hydrogen sulfide is converted to sulfur dioxide (which is odorless) on the catalytic converted after combustion, but when you go full throttle there's too much fuel to be converted and this excess fuel burns the sulfide off without being converted into dioxide and throwing the smell.

Our engines suck way too much fuel when we go full throttle and smell last quite a while compared to other cars.

If you get the bad odor while coasting and not full throttle you may have a damaged catalytic converter or piping. Hope this helps. Cheers.

Not true. Our catalytic converters are designed to handle the amount of fuel flow at all rpm levels from a stock car.

Google CARB regulations

Re: Bad odor with heavy acceleration

I too have noticed this smell on my 2014 Hemi. After hard acceleration I notice it. I haven't tried it without the A/C on, I'll have to give it a try and see if I smell it still.

Re: Bad odor with heavy acceleration

I see you have a dog. Is the dog in the vehicle when this happens? As a kid I would ride in the back seat of our neighbors car, with his dog, while my father rode shotgun, on our way to his lake cabin. When the car accelerated the dog often farted. Just sayin'!

Re: Bad odor with heavy acceleration

I havent noticed this in my jeep, but it happens in every single 4runner i've ever been in...which is a lot.

My brother has had 4 of them, my parents have had 2 and many friends have them. its gross....but dealers say its normal.

maybe there's a loophole in the CARB regulations for under a certain RPM....who knows.
