Belt Squeal

Guys,
My 2013 5.7 with almost 25k miles is starting to squeal like a old worn out belt. Has anyone else heard this yet?
I looked and there are no cracks that I can see, and it still looks good.
Belts normally last longer than that. Hoping this is just not another issue with the jeep.

Have you checked the tension? That seems a tad short for the belt to have
loosened much with wear...

Any pulleys at all out of alignment? Even the slightest wobble in a bearing can make a squeal.

A teeny tiny bit of a bar of soap rubbed on the seating surfaces can temporarily help a squeal, or at least show the difference between the belt squealing or a bearing doing so. Best to thoroughly wash it off afterwards.

Re: Belt Squeal

The noise started to get worse. Got the hood opened and it looks to be a bearing. Tensioner I think. It comes and goes so it is hard to nail down.

Re: Belt Squeal

Well finally found the actual issue. The main pulley on the water pump. Seal maybe, the pulley is moving and is now spewing out anti-freeze I think all over the engine. One more thing to add to the list.

Re: Belt Squeal

I have belt squeal but only on startup then it goes away immediately. The car has 57K miles on it. Should I be concerned? Belt still looks brand new, no cracks. Could it be the tensioner?

Thanks!

Re: Belt Squeal

If it is the automatic tensioner, that would be my guess at a culprit since it is supposed to keep enough tension to keep a reasonably unworn belt from squealing like a Mopar Minivan.
You could have also gotten something on the belt that is letting it slip, where as soon as it does, the heat from the slip stops it.

Could also be an idler pulley.

Us Luddites preferred having multiple belts, as they didn't need to be so !#$!#$ tight and you could fix them with a schwozzle of belt dressing or a bar of soap.

Re: Belt Squeal

Got the call today. They ordered the new water-pump and it won't be here until tomorrow.

Re: Belt Squeal

The saga continues. Get in it today and now there is a squeak coming from the back wheel. Like a rubbing during the wheel rotation. So ready to get rid of this POS.

Are you sure you haven't been invaded by a colony of mice? Or pigs? Or teenage girls?

Re: Belt Squeal

Well, 2 days after getting the thing back the smell of anti-freeze came back, I open the hood and now there is pink fluid being thrown all over the engine bay. So, the new water pump has an issue. I take it back in yesterday. I talked to them about buy back, and they said we would make you a deal on a new one. Gave them a stock number on a Ram I like.
2 hours later I get a call, with them saying my 48k truck that is 1 year old is now only worth 30k. So, I lost 18k in value over a year. Sad, so no new truck for me. End of the day, I get a call from service lady saying it was all fixed. The new water pump had a bad plug in it. The noise from the back comes and goes and it never happens when I can take it in for them to hear. Remember, unless they can re-produce it, it doesn't happen. So, now I wait for the next issue I guess.

Re: Belt Squeal

I had a 14 Limited and the first squeal started at 8k miles and was the tensioner. At 14k the water pump went.
At 20K the Jeep went.

How did you first notice the problem? I notice mine *chirping* sometimes after it's warmed up and I'm next to a wall or parked in my garage, while it echoes. Haven't heard it in a little while though...Definitely coming from the water pump/belts area and I think it may be a bad bearing, but just wanted to see what your experience was?

I just went on a 400 mile round trip and watched the trans temp, also listening for the sound outside when parked, but no dice and the temps stayed normal.

I'm a little worried about it, but more worried about starting to deal with it at the stealership.
