Blue Smoke on Start Up

Hello, first time poster here and first time Jeep owner. I recently purchased a new 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 3.6 liter V6 for my daughter. The truck was built in October of 2013 & currently has 95 miles on the odometer. Upon arriving home from the dealer, I noticed a plume of blue smoke followed by grey smoke on cold start ups. Have witnessed this on several occasions (see video attached). Has anyone experienced this with a new Laredo or know what may be the cause? I'm really concerned, I've never experienced this before on any new vehicle. Of course I am going to take the truck to the dealership, however, they will probably just tell me normal operation & of course my gut tells me it is not. Its the blue smoke that really concerns me. I found a service bulletin but it only pertains to the 5.7 liter engine. Looks like you guys have a great community of Jeep owners here. Thanks in advance.

Re: Blue Smoke on Start Up

Blue is not good and is not normal. The grey "smoke" is fine. It must be cold outside there and that is normal until it warms up.

Re: Blue Smoke on Start Up

I would not be concerned about the white vapor you have coming out mine does that also until warmed up, and actually this jeep puts off more vapor even after warmed up then any car I have had. But I would not consider the puff of blue smoke every time to be normal that would be my concern also.

With only 95 miles on it make sure you follow the break-in recommendations in the owners manual which includes bursts of full throttle operation in the first 300 miles.

Dealer will likely tell you that it is still in break in and normal as you said, still good to get that on the record with them. I would keep an eye on it. Noticeable blue smoke is not normal but I would get some more miles on it and see how it does before considering it a problem.

Re: Blue Smoke on Start Up

From the '14 owner's manual;

"NOTE:
A new engine may consume some oil during its

first few thousand miles (kilometers) of operation. This
should be considered a normal part of the break-in and
not interpreted as an indication of difficulty."

Re: Blue Smoke on Start Up

Agree consuming in early life is normal but consuming enough to blow noticeable blue smoke not sure I would still group that in the normal category. But at only 95 miles, get a few thousand on it and see how it does before thinking a problem.

I disagree with the idea that one should get a few more miles on it. Startup blue smoke is almost always going to be due to leaky valve stem seals or a PCV system issue unless one is on a significant incline or the crankcase is overfilled. I would:

1) Check the oil level on a level surface to ensure it's not overfilled. If it's not...

2) Go directly to the dealership. There are no break-in conditions that cause a puff of blue smoke at startup that are normal for a modern engine. Exhaust burn-off doesn't occur during start-up and less-than-fully-seated rings don't cause this effect and startup either. Oil consumption during break-in may be higher but it should not cause visible smoke.

Re: Blue Smoke on Start Up

As I said get it on file with the dealer but I can almost guarantee you they will tell you it is still breaking in and to keep driving it. They are not going to rip apart an engine with 95 miles on it for that, yet any way.

Re: Blue Smoke on Start Up

My 13 hemi did the blue smoke at first, but don't worry you just need too give it 400 too 1000 miles of normal driving for everything too seat like the piston rings.A little oil may pass by until they set.

What's the rush with a 100,000 mile warranty on the drivetrain?

You sound more credible, if the symptom still exists, if you go in with a couple of thousand miles on it.

Yes you are right Bill no real rush concerning who is paying for any issue but may help to put the owners mind at ease with his new car blowing blue smoke. My thought is it will just clear up in a few thousand but who knows.

I believe the OP needs to have this documented now instead of later. The main reason is that the 3.6 shouldn't have this symptom, and it's best to have it referenced in writing as early as possible. It's unlikely they will do anything right now -- but having an early reference tends to lend for a better response and result later if it continues to be an issue.
