Both paddle shifters only downshifting???

Started today.
2014 Grand Cherokee Limited 6cyl.
I use the right shifter (+/upshift) but it shifts down instead up up.
Only way back to D mode is via shifter and pull back twice to leave manual shift mode...
Anybody???

Re: Both paddle shifters only downshifting???

I am currently playing around with my manual mode in my 5.7L, and I too experienced this, I was in 7th gear and I hit the +paddle and it went to 6th gear. But I haven't totally figured it out just yet, there are some caveats to be learned. I did find that if I hit the +paddle to upshift but was not using the gas pedal to accelerate, it would not shift up, only sometimes. It seems that it needs some kind of input from the gas pedal to shift up consistently.

If I was just coasting, it just seemed almost random if it would shift up or down while using the +paddle. I'm hoping someone can chime in to clarify exactly how to use the paddle shifter. Do you lift off the gas to upshift with the paddle? or do you just leave your foot depressed on the gas pedal while shifting?

Re: Both paddle shifters only downshifting???

Nothing to do with gas pedal.
You pull the paddle and the tranny shifts or not (message displays).
Won't shift if rpm or other conditions are not met.

Thanks for the info! Does anyone know what exactly are the conditions for each gear? Must be RPM or MPH related? I wouldn't get any message when it wouldn't shift btw.

I don't know the exact RPM, but the next gear has to allow the vehicle to be above 1000 RPM for the shift to be allowed. So, if you're already at 1200RPM in 6th, it likely won't let you go to 7th.

Likewise, if you let off the gas in 6th and your RPMs drop below ~1000 RPM, the vehicle will drop down to 5th.

Speed is irrelevant. It's totally RPM based.

Ahhh I see....I probably won't ever use the paddles ever again, I was just wanting to get used to them and know the in's and out's of them. Thanks for the help and info!

Sorry OP didn't mean to hijack your thread! Hopefully you got some answers as well! =)

I'd say not only rpm but torque as well, makes a hell of a difference if you're going downhill without any load on engine or uphill when trying to manually shift, no?

Had mine at the dealer today, they found error code, will order the + paddle wheel shifter and replace, there seems to be an issue with the actual paddle shifter. Wondering if it's designed to last around a year? Fiat quality I suppose ;-)

Re: Both paddle shifters only downshifting???

I'd say you'd immediately know. Either it shifts or you get a message "shift not allowed" in center display. In my case the shift function was completely reversed so easily noticeable...
