Brake Booster

So last year I had the recall done for the brake booster. Before I ever took it in, I noticed my emergency brake light on the dash would come on. I explained this to the dealer. I figured the recall would fix my problem. They do the recall and a few days later, here we go again with the emergency brake light coming on again. I take it back to them and they keep the Jeep all day. They call me and tell me they can't replicate the problem.

My Jeep was due for new brakes anyways so I changed them out. Brake light still comes on. Take it back to them again, nothing can be found.

So yesterday I'm driving and I come up to an intersection on the highway, light turns yellow, I go to apply brakes. Brake pedal is stiff as can be and the car won't stop. Luckily the car turning left waited while I fly through the intersection not being able to stop my car.

I get an apt with the dealership first thing this morning. I get a call saying the brake booster is bad and there's a leak at the Mast Cylinder. They tell me it will be over $500 to repair. I asked them if they would cover it due to the recall. They say no and that it's only when it's in cold weather. I asked the service guy if water getting into the brake booster before the recall was done could cause corrosion. "Absolutely not" he says. Something is telling me they are trying to get out of having to fix the issue that should have been fixed to begin with. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Re: Brake Booster

So I thought I'd give an update. The dealership originally told me my brake booster was bad. I brought up the fact that they told me my brake light was due to the bad brake booster. I then explained to them that my light was coming on before the brake booster recall. I asked him if that was the cause then how did it pass their test when the recall was done? He couldn't answer that and said he didn't have the results from when they tested the booster.

I called Chrysler Customer Care and they assigned some one to my case. When I went to get my Jeep yesterday, this guy said they spoke to him and then he tells me it's not the brake booster but is the Mast Cylinder. So he's basically now changing his story up.

I told him I did not believe that due to the symptoms my car is having. The brake pedal is not mushy and I have never been able to push it to the floor which if it were a bad MC, I would be able to do that. My brake pedal at times has been hard as a rock. Especially when I've had it on cruise and go to press it. I have to give it a few tries due to it being so stiff.

I'm supposed to be getting a call from Chrysler today once they review my issue. Not getting my hopes up. What a joke.

Re: Brake Booster

I have had hand full of booster fail thousands of miles after the P14 recall with a hard pedal just like you describe the booster will be covered under the P14 recall even though its already been performed thats how a recall works since recall are covered life time of the vehicle, the leaking MC issue though I haven't ever see on a 4th gen I suspect your brake light coming on could have been due to the possible low brake fluid level due to the leaking MC?

When I mentioned that to the dealer when they told me the brake booster was bad the reply I got was, "Nope. It passed when we did the recall so you'll have to pay to have it replaced." Nothing was mentioned about the MC. The brake fluid has always been at a normal level. Never once have had to push the pedal to the floor for anything.

I know it's always been a bad brake booster. I honestly believe the dealership is trying to cover their asses by saying it's a MC leak. I turned the Jeep on and let it idle for 2 minutes. Put my foot on the brake and turned the vehicle off. Sure enough, the pedal starts to put pressure against my foot. All signs of a bad brake booster.

Re: Brake Booster

Just got off the phone with Chrysler. Talk about frustrating. They are trying to tell me that the dealership is telling them fluid is leaking into my brake booster from the MC which is causing it to fail. I mentioned to them that this had to have been happening from before the recall was done due to the brake light coming on. I asked why the dealership never noticed this when the recall was done when I brought it forth to their attention. The reply I get, "I don't know. Maybe it wasn't as bad then....?"

I have taken my car to the dealership three times for other things in the last year and mentioned the brake light to them each time. Not once was anything ever done about it.

What is Chrysler's resolution? We will see if we can get an approval for a service manager to cover some of the costs for the repair. That or we will reimburse you for half of the repair if you have it done at a dealership.

Re: Brake Booster

The dealer is either really crooked or dumb, recalls are good for the life time of a vehicle the booster could fail every year for the next 50 years and chrysler will have to pay for the booster and the time for the tech to install it under recall. But if they are claiming the MC caused the booster to fail and you are out of 3yr/ 36k warranty than the MC repair may be on you, but do not pay for the booster as it is covered under the P14 recall for life.
