Brake creak when coming to complete stop

My new GC Laredo X 3.6 2WD creaks every time I come to a complete stop. The noise/feeling is hard to explain. The best I can say is that is wounds the same as if you left your e-brake on by accident and started driving. It feels like when the brakes squeeze down at the full stop that the caliper still skids about 1/4 inch. I took it in and the service department told me that "all cars do it." I told him that can't be because none of my 3 previous cars ever did that. Including my 1996 ZJ that I loved, or the WK2 I first test drove. After this they told me to keep driving and maybe it will go away, if it is still there at my first service they will "see what Chrysler thinks." Does anyone else feel this in theirs? It is extremely annoying in stop and go traffic.

Re: Brake creak when coming to complete stop

Bullsh*t.

It's not normal. Insist they go for drive with you in another WK2 and demonstrate that it's a "normal" noise.

I'll bet they fix it without even going for that test drive.

You should consider another dealer for service if it's practical.

Re: Brake creak when coming to complete stop

I did that, they tried to bluff, then grabbed a demo one and the tech drove it really hard to make it do it (it did it but barely) not even close to what mine does. The only problem with another dealer is that the closest one is 35 miles away and they wouldn't match the deal i got on mine so I don't think they will be to kind to me passing up on them to buy it then make them do warranty work.

Re: Brake creak when coming to complete stop

Then the guy also said that he wouldn't know what to do if he did try to fix it. I brought it to a local brake shop and they said some cars just do that and they would recommend better brake pads, but none are made for these yet.

Re: Brake creak when coming to complete stop

Someone mentioned something similar to me. The crux of it was that brake pads aren't made the way they used to or something. I don't know how much truth there is in that, but the guy who said it has been around cars for forty plus years.

That said if my brakes were creaking I wouldn't be happy, even if 'some cars just do that'.

I changed all my pads and discs a couple of months back and one of the rear ones is still squeaking! I've checked and double checked, even had a mechanic friend check and thereis no reason, other than the pads.

Re: Brake creak when coming to complete stop

I just talked with a guy at the dealership mine was traded from, he said that in the past few years Jeep has changed their pads due to asbestos and they aren't as good. He told me the only way to fix it is to replace the pads with ceramic pads, that is what he did on his new Wrangler and will do it on any vehicle from now on. The only problem is that I can't find any ceramic pads made for the new GC yet.

Re: Brake creak when coming to complete stop

I have 520 miles on it, I thought break in as well, but it isn't changing and after what I heard from the dealer I think I will go with new aftermarket pads.

Re: Brake creak when coming to complete stop

i wouldn't be happy.. i have just over 1500 miles on mine and no squeaks, creaks, or squeals from the brakes, even after several stints of off-roading in some dusty conditions.

Re: Brake creak when coming to complete stop

I contacted Detroit and they said to get the pads changed and they would pay for it, but I worry if they replace them with Mopar pads that it might not fix the problem, then they might not pay to have them changed again to ceramic pads.

Re: Brake creak when coming to complete stop

Its not just mopar vs ceramic, changing them out should fix the problem. It almost sounds like the pads are glazed over. The problem with *many* (not all) ceramic pads is they are not nearly as quiet as the regular OEM pads. They are much more heat resistant but not always better for stopping power. Have them swapped and you should have no problems. Mine is quiet as can be.

**Also it does not matter at ALL where you bought your vehicle and where you have it serviced for warranty work. Unless you burned some bridges at the dealer you did not buy from dont worry about it. They get paid by Chrysler for their work so it is not as though they are repairing for free. I bought my jeep about 80 miles aways in another state because of the MUCH better price offered. I have all of them serviced 3 miles down the road from me. My local jeep dealers service dept is great. Sales on the other hand sucks. But they are still happy to see me and do work, because either way they get paid. And by the way dealers make the majority of their money on service departments, parts, accessories, and other add-ons like warranties, NOT on selling new cars.

Let us know how the fix works out.

Re: Brake creak when coming to complete stop

The brakes probably did not get a proper break-in or somebody test drove it before you and really hammered on the brakes or rode them hot. There might be some glazed spots on the rotor(s) that are not readily seen. If you do get new pads, make SURE they resurface the rotors at that time or you'll have the same issue again.

When you leave the dealer after the pads/rotors are all set, try to avoid hard stops. However, you also should avoid long, light braking applications too like going down a long steep grade and riding the brakes. For the first ~50-100 miles use lots of moderate, steady firm braking rather than long, easy braking or short hard braking. At ~100* miles you should have good surface mating and then brake however you'd like. If you get too hard too soon on the brakes you may cause some glazing and get that creak.

If it were me, I'd do several dozen freeway-speed runs with some moderately hard braking, letting the brakes cool a couple minutes braking applications and see if that doesn't do the trick to eliminate the creak. Don't overheat them!

*Just a guideline; it isn't the miles so much as the quantity and force of braking applications that are made.
