Brake rotors on front and rear feel about 180 Farenhiet after driving but not much braking (no hard braking) just day cruising. Ambient temp outside in the 60's. Ideas? Normal?
Yes, that's normal. When you brake to a stop, you're converting all the kinetic energy of a 5000-pound vehicle into heat. A single stop from 60mph creates enough heat to boil 15 gallons of water. Click here for a readable discussion of the science.
I had a problem on my 11 GC, as there is apparently a problem with, If I recall correct, a problem with the rear brake line? I would get really hot overheating brake pad smell from rear brakes, and found that one of the calipers had locked up. Research found that, again if I recall correctly, a check valve in the brake line (flex line), or something else caused the rear brake to lock up. The solution was to change the rear brake rubber line bewteen the body and brake caliper. Maybe it is a related problem? Something to look into.
