Brakes don't always work

I have a 2012 Laredo X. I've had it for about 2 years and starting last winter I noticed the brakes wouldn't lock when I first started the car up. Granted it was very very cold in PA last winter and the street I live on tends to be a wind tunnel so I figured the system was just too cold and needed to warm up.

Summer comes and don't notice it again. Soon as it gets cooler, boom. Brake issue is back. Hadn't had a brake job since I got it, and I knew about the brake booster recall so I started there. It was fixed. But I still noticed it. Took her in for a brake check and not too bad but tears could use replacing. Me and a buddy swapped out for a pair of Stoptech slotted rotors and ceramic pads.

One thing he noticed was the rear pads were substantially more worn than the fronts...? I'm no mechanic but I think he said something about the calipers sticking or something?

Anyway that was in January. It's now March and I'm still having this issue. When I start it up, and immediately go, sometimes I put the pedal to the floor and they barely work. Then after awhile it's like the "warm up" or something....I've had several jeeps and I've lived in Central Pa my whole life and don't recall this every happening. Anyone have any thoughts? Bad brake lines? Nothing looked out of the ordinary. Jeep only has about 35k on it, I'm 2nd owner, and I take meticulous care of it.

Re: Brakes don't always work

I believe you have to change your brake fluid, seems like you have water in the system that freezes up with it gets cold. Brake fluid needs to be changed at least every 2 years.

Don't quite understand what you are saying.

Does the pedal feel different? What does "lock" mean?

Sorry I meant the brakes would* lock up....like when I would get in, turn it on, step on the brake and put it into reverse to back out of my driveway, as soon as I put it in gear it would move....no matter how hard I hit the brake. I wanna say it was all the way to the floor and it didn't stop...couple times it scared the hell outta me lol.

Originally I figured it was the brake booster but I already took that in for the recall; and I changed out the rotors and pads....not sure what else it could be.

Re: Brakes don't always work

if the pedal goes to the floor there is something seriously wrong..

Need to get a careful repro of the failure to hone in on what it might be..

Re: Brakes don't always work

Have you had the brake booster recall done yet? There is a shroud that goes over it to prevent water from infiltrating the booster shell and freezing.

Yeah I had that done in November. But I really didn't notice a difference. So that's why I looked at the pads and rotors as a cause. But I replaced those and I still have the issue....

I'm just wondering if I have water in the lines or something hence my question about changing the brake fluid.

When you had that recall done they were supposed to test your booster to see if it needed to be replaced because it was contaminated with water that is now freezing before the foam shield was installed. Sounds like you need a new booster to be replaced under warrantee!

You can read about the P14 brake booster recall here;

http://www.wk2jeeps.com/tsb/rc_P1414.pdf

A brake booster that has experienced water ingestion may have the brake function compromised if the water inside the brake booster freezes. The driver may be required to apply additional application force to apply the brakes during sub-freezing driving conditions. An unexpected additional brake pedal application force requirement could slow the driver’s brake application reaction time and cause a crash without warning.

You are obviously experiencing the symptoms of a water contaminated brake booster, it needs to be replaced! Go back to your dealer and remind them they will be liable if your brakes fail and you crash!!!!!

Re: Brakes don't always work

I agree, if they just put the condom on without doing the full test you might have water in the booster.

Re: Brakes don't always work

You guys were right....took it back to the same dealership. First they tried charging a diagnostic fee. Yeah no. Come to pick it up and low and behold, "it was the brake booster. When it was looked at originally we only replaced the gasket. We wouldn't have known the booster itself was bad unless we tested it." My reply, "why wasn't it tested since I brought it in for the BRAKE BOOSTER RECALL?!" Look of stupidity and dumbfoundedness comes over them. Just another reason why I HATE dealerships. Thanks again for the help fellas.
