Brakes suddenly stopped working..

We just picked up this 2011 grand cherokee overland this week from a Jeep dealership. Traded in our JK. We have put 150 miles on it since we bought it.. haven't even put gas in it..

Wife called tonight in a panic that the Jeep wouldn't stop.. I thought maybe the emergency brake was on or something.. I was shocked when I went over to checked and yes.. zero brakes!

Can not press in the brake at all.. Hear a hissing sound from under the hood when I attempt to press down. Slows down the Jeep slightly but needed about 200 feet to come to a stop from 30mph.

Worst thing is our 6 week old was in the Jeep with my wife and it happened when she approached a stop light luckily with no cars coming and no one in front of her!

She never wants to see the Jeep again..

Has anyone experienced this? I figure it is a complete failure of the master cylinder. Jeep was towed to the dealership we bought it from and I'll be calling them in the morning..

I'm wondering if your Jeep had the brake booster recall done prior to you purchasing it? A number of people here reported that their dealers also screwed up the master cylinder as part of this repair.

Here's the recall and repair procedure... http://wk2jeeps.com/tsb/rc_P1414.pdf

What he said.

If hasn't been messed with, I would guess the hiss is either a leaky vacuum booster or bad vacuum hose to the booster. Might be able to tell by opening the hood.

? Temperature when the brakes failed ?

I'd be somewhat inclined to have a chat with the selling dealer immediately.

Re: Brakes suddenly stopped working..

Got the run around all morning saying the dealership was busy and would look at it later this week.. I tried pushing the fact I just bought this Jeep, now have no car and nearly got in an accident last night.. Called at 8am, noon and 3..

Finally got a call back at 4pm asking why my Jeep was there... Guy that called me back was really good and said it most likely was related to the recall and he scheduled a tech to look at it first thing in the morning.

I might use this to push them to also fix my dash leather which in the last week has pulled back.. It looks like they might have tried to cheaply repair..

Paid 35k for this Jeep and tried in our JK for a more family safe/practical call.. My wife is not impressed..

I still love the Jeep however and know these things happen.. but it is concerning what is next..
